Is SY0-801 hard? Difficulty explained
SY0-801 is moderately difficult. CompTIA positions Security+ as an entry-level certification for security administrators with two years of hands-on experience, and the main challenge is breadth, not depth. You need to recognise a large vocabulary of controls, attacks, protocols and documents, and pick the best answer from options that all sound plausible. People with IT experience usually pass after a few weeks of focused study. People with none often find it hard.
What makes it hard
It is broad
Five domains and 27 objectives cover cryptography, attacks, cloud, identity, monitoring, incident response, risk, law and awareness. The objectives warn that their example lists are not exhaustive, so some terms will be new.
Many options are plausible
Questions often ask for the best, first or most appropriate choice. Several options may be partly right, and the wording decides it. “First” in an incident means containment, not recovery.
Performance-based questions
These put you in a simulated task. They are not usually technically deep, but they are unfamiliar and take time.
Similar terms
SLA, SLO, MOU, MOA, MSA and SOW; CVSS and CVE; RTO and RPO; masking, tokenization and hashing. Mixing these up costs marks.
AI topics are new
SY0-801 adds a dedicated AI objective. Material written for SY0-701 does not cover it, so candidates relying on old resources may be caught out.
What makes it easier
- A clear public objectives document with an acronym list.
- Heavy overlap with SY0-701, so abundant study material exists.
- Scores are scaled; 750 out of 900 is not the same as 83%.
How hard for whom
| Background | Expect |
|---|---|
| Security or systems administrator | Moderate; focus on terminology, risk and AI |
| General IT, help desk or networking | Moderate to hard; allow four to six weeks |
| Student with no IT work | Hard; build networking and operating system basics first, for example with Network+ N10-009 |
Common reasons people fail
- Memorising acronyms without understanding scenarios.
- Neglecting Program Management and Concepts because they look dull.
- Running out of time on performance-based questions.
- Studying from V7 material and missing the AI objective.
- Relying on braindumps instead of understanding the reason behind each answer.
How to make it easier
- Follow the study plan.
- Do the practice test and the sample questions early.
- After each wrong answer, write why each other option is wrong.
- Skim performance-based items first, then return after the multiple choice.
- Check the exam format for the latest launch information.
A pass mark of 750 out of 900 means you do not need perfection. A consistent 80-85% on realistic practice is a sensible readiness target.
