Is SY0-801 Security+ worth it? Who should take it
Security+ SY0-801 is worth it if you are starting out in cybersecurity or in a systems or network role that includes security duties, and you want a vendor-neutral credential that proves a broad baseline. It is less worth it if you already have years of security experience and need a specialist credential, or if you only need depth in one vendor’s cloud. CompTIA aims it at security administrators with two years of hands-on experience, and its page names roles such as security analyst, security engineer and systems administrator.
Who it is for
People entering security. Security+ covers the whole field at a foundation level: threats, architecture, operations, governance. It gives you the vocabulary to move into more specific work.
Systems and network administrators. If security is part of your job, the exam formalises what you do and fills gaps in risk, compliance and incident handling.
People who need to show a baseline. Some employers and contracts ask for a recognised security certification. Check your own employer or contract requirements, since they differ.
Who should pick something else
| If you | Consider instead |
|---|---|
| Are weak on networking fundamentals | Network+ N10-009 first |
| Already hold Security+ and want AI security | SecAI+ CY0-001 |
| Work mainly in Microsoft security tooling | SC-200 or SC-300 |
| Want a cloud-vendor security credential | SC-500 |
| Need a first Microsoft security overview | SC-900 |
SY0-801 or SY0-701?
SY0-701 remains available until its retirement dates, June 11, 2027 for English, according to CompTIA. If you are ready sooner, SY0-701 is a valid choice. If not, SY0-801 will stay current longer. See SY0-801 vs SY0-701.
What it costs
CompTIA had not published an SY0-801 price in the pages checked. Budget for the exam, study material and any retake, and see certification costs. The certification renews through CompTIA’s continuing education program on a three-year cycle, which has its own requirements and fee.
What it proves
- You can recognise common threats and respond with appropriate controls.
- You understand security architecture, operations, risk and compliance at a foundation level.
- You have worked with the topics in CompTIA’s published objectives, including the new AI threats objective.
What it does not prove
It is a knowledge exam with some performance-based tasks, not a measure of years of experience. It does not make you a specialist in penetration testing, forensics or a particular platform.
Is it still relevant?
CompTIA revises Security+ on a cycle of roughly three years, and the V8 objectives were updated to include AI risks, modern identity topics and cloud security. That supports its continued relevance, though the job market for any certification varies by country and employer.
The verdict
Take it if you want a broad, vendor-neutral baseline and you are in or entering a role that touches security. Start with the exam format and the study plan.
