SY0-801 career: security admin roles
Security+ SY0-801 leads mainly to hands-on junior and mid-level security administration work. CompTIA’s certification page lists three job roles for Security+, the same for V7 and V8: Security Analyst, Security Engineer and Systems Administrator. The V8 page recommends two years of hands-on experience as a security administrator, so the credential is designed to confirm skills people already use on the job, not to replace that experience. For dates, renewal and retakes, see SY0-801 renewal and retake rules.
Three titles CompTIA puts on the Security+ page
Security Analyst. The title closest to the exam’s incident response and monitoring content. Domain 4 (Security Operations, 27%) covers alert handling, vulnerability management and response, which is the daily material of an analyst role.
Security Engineer. This one leans on Domain 3 (Security Architecture, 19%): segmentation, secure design, resilience. Security+ is a broad foundation here, not an engineering design credential.
Systems Administrator. The least obvious title on the list, and the most honest one. Plenty of people take Security+ while keeping an infrastructure job whose duties now include hardening, patching and access control.
The V7 page goes a step further and lists work roles from the US Department of Defense 8140 framework, including cyber defense analyst, incident responder, vulnerability analyst and system administrator. The V8 page does not mention DoD 8140 at all. If a government or contractor job requires Security+ under that framework, do not assume V8 is already mapped: ask the hiring organisation which exam code and version it accepts.
What a V8 pass shows, and what it leaves open
| It shows | It does not show |
|---|---|
| Broad command of five domains at a foundation level | Depth in one specialty such as forensics or penetration testing |
| You have met the new AI-threat objective (prompt injection, poisoning, hallucinations) | That you have secured an AI system in production |
| Familiarity with performance-based tasks in a simulation | Years of experience: the exam does not check work history |
| Knowledge of governance terms such as BIA, SLA and ALE | Authority to make risk decisions in an organisation |
CompTIA also states that the exam is accredited under ISO 17024 through ANAB. That tells an employer the exam is run to a certification-body standard, nothing more.
Where people go from here
The sensible next step depends on which gap your job exposes.
- Networking is thin. Take Network+ N10-009, the usual partner to Security+ in the CompTIA stack.
- You want to secure AI systems. SecAI+ CY0-001 builds on the AI objective that V8 introduces.
- Your employer runs Microsoft. Compare SC-200 for security operations and SC-300 for identity.
- You want a network credential from another vendor. Cisco’s 200-301 sits alongside it.
The full sequence is on the CompTIA certification path. Beyond what the site covers, CompTIA’s own CE pages say a higher-level CompTIA certification can renew a lower one, which is a quiet reason to climb the stack.
Checking pay and demand for SY0-801 roles
This page quotes no salary or hiring figures, because none came from a CompTIA source. For neutral occupation data, look up information security analysts in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, or search your own country’s equivalent, and compare against local job adverts that name Security+.
Timing the V8 switch for your CV
SY0-801 is expected to launch on or around November 17, 2026, per CompTIA’s V8 page, and SY0-701 retires on June 11, 2027 for English. A certification earned on either version is still Security+. For a job application it is usually the credential name that counts, but check any listing that names an exam code. If you are choosing between versions, the SY0-801 vs SY0-701 comparison and the is it worth it page cover that decision, and the study plan covers the preparation.
A realistic reading of the “two years” line
The experience recommendation is easy to skim past. CompTIA does not require two years of work before you sit the exam, and it does not mention Network+ in the V8 wording, but the objectives assume you have already configured firewalls, read logs or handled access requests. If you are a career changer without that background, treat the first role as the place the credential gets tested in practice: help desk, junior systems administration or a SOC trainee post are typical doorways, and the exam then backs up what you learn there.
