Is SC-900 hard? Exam difficulty explained

Updated October 9, 2026

SC-900 is one of the easier Microsoft exams: it is a fundamentals exam with no configuration, no code and a 45-minute limit. It is still not trivial. The difficulty comes from breadth and similar names, not depth: dozens of Defender, Entra and Purview features that sound alike, and statement questions where one word makes a choice wrong. Most candidates with a few weeks of steady study pass; people who skim and rely on common sense are the ones who struggle.

What makes it harder than it looks

  • Product names. Defender for Cloud, Defender for Cloud Apps, Defender for Endpoint and Defender for Identity are four different products. Scenario questions test whether you can tell them apart.
  • Breadth. Four skill areas span identity, network security, threat protection and data governance, and a scenario can come from any of them.
  • Renamed products. Material from earlier years uses outdated names.
  • Careful reading. Statement series and multiple-answer questions penalise assumptions.

What makes it easier

  • Everything is conceptual; you never need to know steps.
  • The skills outline is public and specific, down to bullet-level.
  • Microsoft offers a free practice assessment and exam sandbox.
  • The 45-minute limit is generous.
  • Questions tend to name the problem, so one keyword often reveals the answer.

Difficulty by background

BackgroundRealistic preparation
IT admin or security-adjacent2–3 weeks, mostly learning the Microsoft product map
Some IT knowledge, no Microsoft security4 weeks at 4–6 hours a week
Non-technical (compliance, legal, sales)5–6 weeks; start with the prerequisites
Student with no IT experience6 weeks, with a trial tenant to click around

The hardest areas

Security solutions is the most demanding because it has the most weight and the most product names. Compliance (Purview) comes second: sensitivity labels, DLP, retention and records management overlap in everyday language but differ on the exam. Entra is usually the easiest for IT staff and the hardest for people new to identity.

How the scoring works

You need 700 of 1000, a scaled score and not a straight percentage. Microsoft does not publish the number of questions, so you cannot plan to a safe margin; aim for a steady 80% on realistic practice.

How to reduce the difficulty

  1. Study from the current outline and weights.
  2. Build a one-line “what is it for” note per product; the cheat sheet is a start.
  3. Practice with the free test and the official practice assessment.
  4. Read the exam tips on telling similar products apart.

Compared with AZ-900 it is similar in level; see SC-900 versus AZ-900 to choose.
