SC-500 study scenarios: where your hours go

Updated October 10, 2026

For SC-500, plan for coverage rather than depth, because its four domains are nearly equal: Manage identity, access, and governance (20–25%), Secure storage, databases, and networking (25–30%), Secure compute (20–25%) and Manage and monitor security posture (20–25%). The exam lasts 120 minutes and needs 700 out of 1000, and no domain is small enough to skip.

Example profiles, not real people. The profiles below are illustrative planning examples built from the official exam outline. They are not reviews or reports of anyone’s result.

The study plan runs six weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week for someone with Azure administration experience, and a two to three week compressed route for former AZ-500 holders. The budgets are planning assumptions that follow from that plan.

Profile one: the former AZ-500 holder

Starting point. Held or studied for AZ-500, which retired on August 31, 2026. Knows Entra ID, Key Vault, network security groups and Defender for Cloud well.

Where the time goes. The AI security objectives, inside Secure compute (20–25%), none of which existed on AZ-500: Entra Agent ID, Purview DSPM for AI, real-time protection for Copilot Studio agents, AI Gateway in API Management and Defender for AI Services. Then the other new items: Security Copilot, Entra Private Access, Virtual Network Manager, EASM and container objectives.

The trap. Assuming the old knowledge covers the new exam. The AI block and the reorganised domains mean confident answers can still be wrong.

Suggested order. AI security first, then the other new tooling, then a practice exam and a look at the score report by domain.

Time budget. A planning assumption is two to three weeks, about 16 to 30 hours, following the compressed route.

Profile two: the Azure administrator who has never owned security

Starting point. Builds virtual networks, storage accounts and virtual machines, and assigns RBAC roles. Security was someone else’s job, apart from NSG rules and a few policies.

Where the time goes. All four domains, because with flat weights there is nowhere to hide a weakness. The largest, Secure storage, databases, and networking (25–30%), deserves the most hours: Defender for Storage and Databases, private endpoints, Azure Firewall, effective rules in Network Watcher. Governance (Azure Policy, regulatory compliance, resource locks) is the part administrators assume they know.

The trap. Studying only what already feels familiar. A strong administrator can finish compute and networking early and then run out of time before posture and monitoring.

Suggested order. Follow the plan’s six weeks as written, from identity to governance, storage and networking, AI, compute, then posture.

Time budget. A planning assumption is six weeks at 8 to 10 hours, 48 to 60 hours.

Profile three: the identity specialist who knows Entra and little else

Starting point. Operates Entra ID, Conditional Access and PIM thoroughly. Has not secured storage, databases, containers or networks.

Where the time goes. The first domain is the strong one, and it is only 20–25%. The remaining three quarters of the exam is infrastructure: storage and SQL hardening, networking, servers, containers, App Service, Defender for Cloud, Sentinel data collection and Security Copilot.

The trap. Letting the identity strength set the confidence level. A specialist can pass the identity portion easily and still lose most of the paper in compute and networking.

Suggested order. Storage, databases and networking, compute, posture and monitoring, then the AI content, with a light verification pass of the identity week.

Time budget. A planning assumption is six to seven weeks, 48 to 70 hours, with the identity week replaced by a hands-on infrastructure week.

How to check which SC-500 profile fits before booking

Microsoft states that the practice assessment is not currently available, so use the sample questions and the practice test, and compare your results by domain with the skills outline. The exam format page explains the flat weighting, and the SC-500 vs AZ-500 page lists what is new.

The identity-heavy route links naturally to SC-300.
