SC-500 renewal and retake rules
The Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate credential earned with SC-500 is valid for one year from the day all requirements are met, and renewal is a free, unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later ones, with at most five attempts in 12 months. Those rules come from Microsoft’s policy pages, not from SC-500 specifically; the SC-500 details are in how they interact with a brand-new exam and a retired predecessor.
One-year validity and the six-month renewal window
Microsoft’s credential expiration policy states that role-based credentials, associate and expert, are valid for one year from the date you complete the requirements. The renewal FAQ adds the mechanics:
- The renewal assessment opens six months before expiry, with times in UTC.
- It is free, online, open book and unproctored, and takes about 45 minutes.
- Passing extends the credential one year from the expiration date, and the new date shows on your Learn profile immediately.
- There is no limit on attempts. You may retry immediately after the first failure, then must wait at least 24 hours between later attempts.
- Passing a beta exam or retaking the proctored exam does not renew it. Microsoft says there are no exceptions.
- If the credential expires, it cannot be renewed; you re-earn it by passing the required exam again.
Renewal assessments follow the same update cadence as the exam, so a renewal taken after a skills-outline change tests the newer material. Given how fast the AI objectives (Entra Agent ID, Copilot Studio agent protection, Defender for AI Services) are moving, expect the renewal content to shift year to year.
Unconfirmed point: the FAQ says renewal options exist for associate credentials that have been available for more than six months. Microsoft’s SC-500 certification page does not state a renewal assessment date, so check the Renew button in your Learn profile rather than assuming it appears at the six-month mark.
What happened to AZ-500 holders
The retired Azure Security Engineer Associate page says the certification, its exam and its renewal assessments retired on August 31, 2026, and that you can no longer earn or renew it after that date. The expiration policy covers what holders keep: a retired credential stays in the Active section of the transcript until it expires if it has an expiry date. For AZ-500 holders that means the badge fades out at its existing expiry date but cannot be extended.
The renewal FAQ also explains the mechanism behind this. When a retirement date falls before the expiration date, learners are told to renew before retirement, and the renewal window can be shortened. Anyone who missed that has no renewal path now. Microsoft’s pages describe no conversion or transition exam from AZ-500, so SC-500 is a fresh exam. The domain changes are in SC-500 vs AZ-500.
Failing SC-500: the retake ladder
Microsoft’s retake policy for role-based exams:
| Attempt | Wait before it |
|---|---|
| Second | 24 hours after the first |
| Third to fifth | 14 days after the previous attempt |
| Sixth | Not before 12 months from the date of the first attempt |
Each retake is a new paid sitting where a fee applies, and fees vary by country or region as shown at booking. Passing an exam you already hold is not allowed unless the certification has expired. A waiting-period waiver exists only for internet or equipment failure during the exam where Pearson VUE opened a case; the request needs the case number, and no other reason qualifies.
Practical consequence: with a 14-day gap, a failure on the first Monday cannot be fixed by cramming over the weekend. Use the score report to find the weak skill area, because the weighting is nearly flat and a weak spot in any one of the four areas costs points. The is SC-500 hard? page covers where candidates tend to lose marks.
Exam logistics that affect a retake
- Languages: ten are offered. If yours is missing, the study guide says you can request 30 extra minutes.
- Accommodations: Microsoft offers a request process for assistive devices, extra time or changes to the exam experience; request before booking.
- Account choice: the certification page recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account, because records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave the organisation.
- Format reminders: see exam format and exam day.
The same one-year renewal and retake rules apply to Microsoft’s other associate exams such as SC-200 and SC-300. Fundamentals credentials such as SC-900 do not expire. For what the credential leads to once held, see SC-500 career paths; for exam fees across vendors, see certification costs.
