SC-401 study resources
The best SC-401 resources are free: Microsoft’s skills outline, the official practice assessment, the Microsoft Purview documentation, and a Microsoft 365 test tenant where you configure things yourself. Add realistic practice questions to find your weak domain. The one thing to be careful with is outdated material, because the exam is revised and the October 2026 outline adds weight to AI-related objectives that older courses never covered.
Start with the official material
The study guide and skills outline. Three domains of 30–35% each. The study guide at aka.ms/SC401-StudyGuide lists every objective, the exam date it applies from and the change log. Read it before anything else and keep it open.
The exam page and certification page. Microsoft Learn has pages for the exam and the Information Security Administrator Associate certification, including the schedule button, renewal and the free learning content Microsoft links to.
The practice assessment. Microsoft offers a free official practice assessment for SC-401. Take it cold at the start and again near the end.
The exam sandbox and prep video. The exam sandbox shows the interface and question types. Microsoft also links an SC-401 prep video from the certification page.
The Purview documentation. The Microsoft Purview documentation is the exam’s real textbook. The study guide itself points to the DLP overview. For each feature in the outline, read the overview and the plan-and-deploy article: sensitivity labels, DLP, retention, Insider Risk Management, Audit, eDiscovery and DSPM for AI.
Lab work is the differentiator
SC-401 describes a business requirement and asks which Purview configuration meets it. Six labs cover most of it:
- Classify. A custom sensitive info type, a document fingerprint, and a look at Content explorer.
- Label. Two labels with encryption and marking, a label policy with mandatory labelling, a container label, and an auto-labeling policy in simulation.
- Prevent leaks. A DLP policy for email and SharePoint with an override, then an Endpoint DLP rule on an onboarded device.
- Retain. An adaptive scope, a retention policy, and a retention label with a disposition review. Check the result with Policy lookup.
- Detect insider risk. An Insider Risk policy from a template, indicators, and a review of Adaptive Protection settings.
- Investigate. An audit search, Activity explorer, a DLP alert, an eDiscovery case, and the DSPM for AI prerequisites.
A trial tenant is enough for most of these. Several features (Endpoint DLP, Insider Risk, Audit Premium) need particular licences, so note which licence enables which feature while you work.
Worth paying for
Practice tests written against the current outline help you find the weakest domain. The free 20-question test here is a first check.
What to avoid
Outdated courses. If a resource focuses on compliance topics such as communication compliance or compliance manager, or it never mentions DSPM for AI, it predates the current outline. Check it against the objective list.
Braindumps. They break Microsoft’s exam agreement, risk revocation of your certifications, and do not help with scenario questions.
Click-path memorisation. The Purview portal changes often. Learn what each setting does and which feature meets which requirement.
A sensible order
- Read the study guide and take the practice assessment cold.
- Work through the domains with the documentation and labs, following the four-week study plan.
- Take the practice test and find the weak domain.
- Revisit that domain’s guide and lab.
- Book when you score 80% or more twice in a row.
