SC-401 study plan: pass in 4 weeks

Updated October 9, 2026

Four weeks is realistic for SC-401 if you already administer Microsoft 365 and can study 8–10 hours a week. Spend week one on classification and sensitivity labels, week two on DLP and Endpoint DLP, week three on retention and Insider Risk Management, and week four on audit, eDiscovery, DSPM for AI and review. If you have never opened the Microsoft Purview portal, add two weeks of hands-on time first, because this exam rewards people who have clicked through the settings.

Before you start

  • Read the official skills outline once, end to end. Note the date it is effective for your sitting.
  • Get a tenant to work in. A Microsoft 365 developer or trial tenant with Purview features is ideal. Many features (Insider Risk, Audit Premium, Endpoint DLP) depend on licences, and knowing which is part of the exam.
  • Install PowerShell with the Security and Compliance module so you can read cmdlet-based questions.
  • Take the free official practice assessment cold and write down the domain scores.

Week 1: classification and sensitivity labels (domain 1, first half)

Goal: identify data, then label and encrypt it.

  • Sensitive info types: built-in versus custom, pattern, keyword and checksum, confidence levels, document fingerprinting, exact data match, trainable classifiers, OCR.
  • Data explorer and Content explorer for monitoring what is classified and labelled.
  • Sensitivity labels: scope (items and containers), encryption, content marking, sublabels and priority, label policies, default and mandatory labelling, auto-labeling in apps versus service-side policies with simulation.
  • Container labels for Teams, Microsoft 365 groups and SharePoint sites.
  • Roles and permissions for label administration.

Lab: create Confidential and Highly Confidential labels, publish them to a pilot group, build a custom sensitive info type and an auto-labeling policy in simulation mode.

Week 2: client, encryption and DLP (domain 1 second half, domain 2 first half)

  • Information Protection client and scanner: discovery before enforcement, on-premises file shares.
  • Message Encryption and Advanced Message Encryption.
  • DLP policies: locations, conditions, actions, policy tips, override with justification, simulation mode, rule priority and precedence, roles.
  • DLP and Adaptive Protection, and file policies in Defender for Cloud Apps.
  • Endpoint DLP: device onboarding, supported platforms and browsers, settings groups, just-in-time protection, monitoring endpoint activity.

Lab: a DLP policy that blocks credit card numbers sent externally from Exchange and SharePoint with an override, then an Endpoint DLP rule for USB copy on an onboarded device.

Week 3: retention and insider risk (domain 2 second half, domain 3 first half)

  • Retention: policies versus labels, publish versus auto-apply, adaptive scopes, event-based retention, disposition, records, precedence and Policy lookup, recovering retained content.
  • Insider Risk Management: roles, connectors (HR and others), Defender for Endpoint integration, templates, indicators, policies, alerts, cases, notice templates, forensic evidence, Adaptive Protection risk levels.

Lab: an adaptive-scope retention policy for a department, a published retention label with a disposition review, and a Data theft by departing users policy with a test HR connector, or at least its settings reviewed.

Week 4: audit, eDiscovery, AI and review (domain 3 second half)

  • Audit: Standard versus Premium, licence assignment, retention policies, searching the log.
  • Activity explorer and DLP alerts in the Purview portal; Purview alerts in Defender XDR; Defender for Cloud Apps file policy alerts.
  • eDiscovery: searches, holds, exports.
  • DSPM for AI: prerequisites, roles, policies and monitoring; controls for content used by AI services.

Review: take the free 20-question practice test mid-week and repeat the official assessment. Spend remaining time on the lowest domain using its guide in this section.

If you already administer Purview

Compress weeks 1 and 2. Spend the saved time on the objectives people seldom touch at work: exact data match, trainable classifiers, the scanner, Advanced Message Encryption, forensic evidence, Adaptive Protection and DSPM for AI.

How to know you are ready

  • You can say which Purview feature fits a requirement without hesitation: label, DLP rule, retention label, retention policy or Insider Risk policy.
  • You know the prerequisites for each: licence, role, device onboarding, connector or audit.
  • You can explain what happens when two policies conflict.
  • You score 80% or more twice in a row on different realistic question sets.

Then book. See the exam format and the exam day guide.
