SC-401 prerequisites: what you need first
SC-401 has no required prerequisite certification: the certification page for Information Security Administrator Associate lists none. It does state a background: “You should be familiar with all Microsoft 365 services, PowerShell, Microsoft Entra, the Microsoft Defender portal, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps.” In practice the exam is hard to pass without hands-on time in Microsoft Purview, because questions describe a configuration and ask which feature or setting meets a requirement.
What Microsoft says
The page describes a role that plans and implements information security for sensitive data using Microsoft Purview and related services, protects data in Microsoft 365 collaboration environments, and protects data used by AI services. Besides the familiarity sentence quoted above, Microsoft publishes no number of years. The page was last updated on 14 October 2026.
The background that helps
Microsoft 365 workloads
Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams are where data lives, so labels, DLP and retention act on them. Know where a file is stored and how it is shared.
Microsoft Entra
Users, groups, roles and administrative units. Many Purview features depend on roles and permissions, so confusion about access causes wrong answers.
The Defender portal and Defender for Cloud Apps
Alerts, incidents and cloud app controls appear in the alerts and activities guide.
Purview concepts
Classification, labels, policies and retention. You do not need depth before studying, but you should recognise the terms; the guides on information protection, data loss prevention, retention and insider risk management cover them.
PowerShell
Connecting to services and reading simple commands.
Licences and prerequisites of features
Many answers hinge on a licence, role, onboarded device or turned-on audit setting. Build the habit of asking what must already be true.
How much hands-on time is enough
Microsoft publishes no hours or years, so treat this as a practical rule of thumb rather than an official figure. Aim to have created at least one sensitivity label and published it, built a DLP policy in test mode and read its match report, set up a retention policy, and opened the audit log. An hour with each makes the exam’s scenario questions far easier, because you will have seen the settings the answers refer to. If your employer’s tenant is off limits, a trial tenant is the safe place to try them, bearing in mind that some Purview features need particular licences and may not be available in a trial.
The new AI-related content is the part least likely to be familiar. Reading the protect AI data guide early shows how much of it builds on the same labels and policies you already know.
Likewise, all three skill areas carry the same weight range, so a gap in one of them cannot be offset by strength in another.
What you do not need
| Not needed | Why |
|---|---|
| SC-900 | Not listed as a requirement |
| SC-300 or another associate exam | None listed |
| Coding skills | PowerShell reading only |
| A security operations background | That is the SC-200 role |
| Legal training | Compliance appears as configuration, not law |
Self-check
- What is the difference between a sensitivity label and a retention label?
- Where do you find who accessed a file?
- Why might a DLP policy not apply to a laptop?
- What does an administrator need before using an advanced Purview feature?
- What is the difference between a Microsoft 365 group and a security group?
Two or more gaps: practise in a trial tenant, then use the study plan.
