SC-300 vs SC-401: which exam fits you?
Take SC-300 if your job is who can sign in and what they can reach; take SC-401 if your job is protecting the data once they are in. SC-300 leads to the Identity and Access Administrator Associate credential and centres on Microsoft Entra. SC-401 leads to the Information Security Administrator Associate credential and centres on Microsoft Purview. Neither is a prerequisite for the other, and Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification for either.
The two exams side by side
| SC-300 | SC-401 | |
|---|---|---|
| Certification | Identity and Access Administrator Associate | Information Security Administrator Associate |
| Level | Associate (intermediate) | Associate (intermediate) |
| Main product | Microsoft Entra | Microsoft Purview |
| Duration | 100 minutes | 100 minutes |
| Passing score | 700 | 700 |
| Languages offered | 10 | 7 |
| Core question | Who is this, and what may they access? | Where is sensitive data, and how is it protected? |
| Typical tasks | Conditional Access, PIM, access reviews, app registrations, hybrid sync | Sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, retention, insider risk |
Microsoft’s own description of the information security role is to plan and implement protection of sensitive data with Microsoft Purview and related services, including data used by AI services. The identity role is about identities across their lifecycle for users, devices, Azure resources and applications, with Zero Trust principles applied.
What each exam actually asks
SC-300 scenarios read like an identity ticket. A contractor must reach one app only from a compliant device. An admin role should be active for one hour with approval. A partner company’s staff need access to a SharePoint site and should lose it automatically after 90 days. You answer with a Conditional Access policy, a PIM setting, an access package.
SC-401 scenarios read like a data ticket. Files containing credit card numbers must not be shared externally. Executives’ mailboxes need a retention policy. A user downloading large volumes before leaving needs to be flagged. You answer with a sensitivity label, a data loss prevention policy, an insider risk policy.
Where they overlap
Both assume Microsoft 365 knowledge and both touch Entra. SC-401 expects familiarity with Microsoft Entra and Defender for Cloud Apps, and SC-300 tests Defender for Cloud Apps for app access control. Conditional Access is the clearest shared idea: SC-300 builds the policies, while SC-401 uses the resulting access signals. If you pass one first, the other is easier, but it is not a shortcut.
Which to take first
| If you are… | Start with |
|---|---|
| A Microsoft 365 or Azure admin who creates users, groups and licences daily | SC-300 |
| Responsible for Entra Connect, MFA rollout, guest access or app onboarding | SC-300 |
| A compliance or records manager working with labels, retention and eDiscovery | SC-401 |
| New to Microsoft security | SC-900 first, then either |
| Heading towards a SOC analyst role | SC-200 |
If you do both identity and data work, choose by what you do most. The identity exam is the more technical one, since it expects you to read PowerShell and KQL; the information security exam is closer to policy design.
How SC-300 differs in depth
SC-300 goes deeper on a smaller product. Entra ID has many settings with interacting rules: three kinds of external access control, two sync tools, several authentication methods, and Conditional Access conditions that combine. Questions often hinge on a single detail such as a policy that is in report-only mode, a role that is eligible but not active, or consent that is user-granted rather than admin-granted. Hands-on practice in a tenant pays off more here than reading.
Do both?
Many professionals end up with both, plus SC-200 for security operations. Do them one at a time. Each outline is long, and the 12-month renewal means you eventually maintain every one of them with a free online assessment. For the identity exam, see the exam format and the study plan.
