Is SC-300 hard? Difficulty explained
SC-300 is a moderately hard associate exam. It is harder than a fundamentals exam such as SC-900, because it tests configuration decisions rather than definitions, and it is easier than an expert-level design exam. Candidates who work with Microsoft Entra ID every day usually find it fair; candidates who only know it from reading find the scenario questions slippery. Microsoft does not publish pass rates, so no official number tells you otherwise.
What makes it hard
Interacting settings. The questions rarely test one feature. They combine a Conditional Access policy, a licence, a device state and an exclusion, and ask what happens. Knowing each feature alone is not enough.
Similar-sounding options. Delegated versus application permissions, eligible versus active assignments, user risk versus sign-in risk, system- versus user-assigned identities. Wrong answers are real features used in the wrong place.
Breadth. Four domains cover hybrid sync, authentication, applications, governance, Global Secure Access, Defender for Cloud Apps and logging with KQL. Each is a product in its own right.
Change. Entra evolves quickly. Names and features move, and Microsoft updates the English outline periodically; the current update takes effect on October 28, 2026.
Code reading. The audience profile names PowerShell and KQL. You need to read short snippets and say what they return.
What makes it manageable
- The skills outline lists every objective, and the study guide marks changes.
- A free practice assessment and exam sandbox exist.
- The tool is an admin portal you can practise in; every domain can be built in a test tenant.
- Scenario questions reward understanding over memorisation. If you know why a setting exists, you can reason about a new situation.
Who finds it easier
| Background | Effect |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 or Entra administrator | Domains 1 and 2 are mostly revision |
| Active Directory and Entra Connect experience | Hybrid identity is familiar |
| App developer who registered apps | Workload identities are familiar |
| Passed SC-900 | The vocabulary is in place; the depth is new |
| No admin experience | Expect to double the preparation time |
Where candidates struggle
- Conditional Access troubleshooting that needs the sign-in log and the What If tool.
- Governance licensing and design: access packages, connected organizations and review settings.
- Cross-tenant settings: inbound versus outbound, trust of claims, and cross-tenant sync.
- Defender for Cloud Apps: often treated lightly, then tested in detail.
- KQL and diagnostic settings: destinations and what each is for.
How long to prepare
About four weeks at 8–10 hours a week for someone with relevant experience, following the study plan. Add time if you have never worked in an Entra tenant. A good sign is scoring 80% or more on realistic questions twice in a row; the free practice test is a first check.
Difficulty compared
| Exam | Comment |
|---|---|
| SC-900 | Fundamentals; concepts only, 45 minutes |
| SC-300 | Associate; configuration scenarios, 100 minutes |
| SC-401 | Associate; same level, different product (Purview) |
| SC-200 | Associate; adds threat hunting and KQL in depth |
Hard is relative to preparation. With a lab and a plan, SC-300 is a fair exam. Read is it worth it before deciding, and the exam tips for how to approach the questions.
