Is SC-300 worth it? Who should take it

Updated October 9, 2026

SC-300 is worth it if you administer or plan to administer identity in a Microsoft environment: Entra ID, hybrid sync, Conditional Access, application access and privileged access. It is Microsoft’s associate certification for that role and covers the work in the role description. It is less worth it if your daily work is data protection, security operations or application code, where other exams fit better.

What the credential says

Microsoft describes the identity and access administrator as someone who designs, implements and operates an organisation’s identity and access management with Microsoft Entra, covering identities for users, devices, Azure resources and applications, and applying Zero Trust principles. The certification page lists the role as Security Engineer and the level as intermediate. It demonstrates that you can modernise identity solutions, implement hybrid identity and implement identity governance.

Who it is for

Microsoft 365 and Entra administrators. The exam formalises what you do: users, groups, licences, MFA, guest access, app onboarding.

On-premises Active Directory administrators. Hybrid identity, Entra Connect or Cloud Sync, and moving away from AD FS are in scope. The audience profile expects familiarity with AD DS.

Security engineers. Conditional Access, ID Protection, PIM and Global Secure Access are central to a Zero Trust design.

Consultants and partners. Identity is a standard project type. Check your partner programme’s current requirements for certification credit.

Cost and maintenance

The price is set per country or region and shown at booking; see certification costs. The certification is valid for 12 months and renews at no cost through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification for SC-300, so you can book it directly.

A realistic view

A certificate does not replace experience, but it shows a structured grasp of a wide product. The study process itself has value: building Conditional Access, PIM and entitlement management in a lab teaches you to think about access as a lifecycle. If you already do this work, the exam validates it. If you do not, it gives you a path into it.

Before you commit

  1. Read the skills outline and see how many objectives you already do at work.
  2. Take the free official practice assessment.
  3. If most of it looks unfamiliar, start with the study plan and add time.
  4. Check exam changes so you study the right outline version.

If the answer to most of these is yes, book it.
