SC-300 career: identity admin roles
SC-300 leads to identity and access administration work in Microsoft environments, and Microsoft tags the credential with a single role: Security Engineer, at the Intermediate level, under the subject “Security”. That tag is worth noticing, because the exam title says “administrator” while the catalogue filing says “engineer”. The certification page describes someone who designs, implements and operates identity and access management with Microsoft Entra, and the English version of that description is updated together with the exam on October 28, 2026.
Titles that match the Entra job description
Microsoft’s wording covers identities “throughout their lifecycles for users, devices, Microsoft Azure resources, and applications”, plus responsibility for Zero Trust principles in identity and access solutions. Employers rarely use Microsoft’s label, so the matching titles are a mix:
- Identity and access management (IAM) engineer or administrator
- Microsoft Entra administrator, or Microsoft 365 identity administrator
- Security engineer with an identity focus
- Directory services administrator moving from on-premises Active Directory to hybrid
- Application onboarding or SSO specialist at a managed service provider or partner
These are common labels, not a list published by Microsoft. For the wider occupation, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes network and computer systems administrators, including adding users and assigning permissions. That page is also where current pay and outlook figures live; this site quotes none.
What the audience profile assumes you already did
Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification. The profile says you should be familiar with Azure, Microsoft 365 services and workloads, Active Directory Domain Services, PowerShell and Kusto Query Language (KQL). In practice that describes a few typical starting points:
| Starting point | What carries over | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| On-premises AD DS administrator | Users, groups, GPO thinking, Kerberos | Entra Connect Sync, Cloud Sync, leaving AD FS, Conditional Access |
| Microsoft 365 administrator | Licences, groups, MFA, guest sharing | Cross-tenant access, PIM, access packages, app registrations |
| Azure administrator | RBAC, managed identities | Entra roles versus Azure roles, ID Protection, governance |
| Help desk with password reset duty | Daily account problems | A lab tenant and most of the exam |
The last row is the stretch case. The study guide lists tasks such as evaluating effective permissions of Entra roles, migrating from AD FS and designing Application Proxy integration, which are hard to learn from reading alone. See the study plan for a lab-first order.
What the credential does not prove
- Detection and response. Risky users and risky sign-ins appear in the identity outline, but incident handling, Sentinel and Defender work belongs to SC-200.
- Data protection. Labels, DLP and retention are the territory of SC-401; the two exams are compared in SC-300 versus SC-401.
- Platform security design. Securing cloud and AI workloads at design level is covered by SC-500.
- Azure infrastructure. Networks, storage and compute are the subject of AZ-104.
- Current knowledge. The credential expires after 12 months unless renewed, so the date on the transcript matters; see renewal and retake rules.
What usually comes after SC-300
There is no Microsoft-defined successor to SC-300, and it is not a prerequisite for another credential that this site covers. The sensible next step depends on which half of the job you want more of:
- Towards operations and detection: SC-200, since the identity-risk and log-analysis skills (KQL, sign-in logs) transfer directly.
- Towards data governance: SC-401, which suits an administrator who is asked who may open a file rather than who may sign in.
- Towards Azure platform work: AZ-104, then the architect route described on the Azure administrator and architect path.
- Towards broader security design: SC-500 and the rest of the Microsoft security certification path.
Newcomers who find the SC-300 prerequisites heavy can start with the fundamentals exam SC-900, which does not expire.
Reading the market without made-up numbers
Whether SC-300 helps in a given application depends on the job advert. Search adverts in your region for the products named in the outline (Conditional Access, PIM, Entra Connect) and count how many ask for hands-on experience versus a certification. That is a better signal than any national average. Before applying, decide whether the worth-it assessment fits your situation.
