SC-200 exam tips: what to focus on
The most useful SC-200 tip is to spend your revision where the marks are: roughly 80% of the paper sits in managing the environment and responding to incidents, and KQL fluency gives you points in all three domains. After that, learn the product boundaries that questions test, such as automation rule versus playbook, custom detection versus analytics rule, and Audit versus content search.
Weight your revision
| Domain | Weight | Suggested share of study time |
|---|---|---|
| Manage a security operations environment | 40–45% | About 40% |
| Respond to security incidents | 35–40% | About 30% |
| Perform threat hunting | 20–25% | About 20% |
| KQL practice across all three | Daily, 15–20 minutes |
Know the pairs that get confused
- Automation rule vs playbook: rules triage inside Sentinel without code; playbooks are Logic Apps workflows that call outside systems.
- Custom detection rule vs analytics rule: the first lives in Defender XDR and runs on advanced hunting tables; the second lives in Sentinel and runs on workspace tables.
- Automated investigation vs automatic attack disruption: one investigates alerts and remediates; the other contains an active, high-confidence attack on its own.
- Audit vs content search vs Graph activity logs: actions, items, and API calls.
- Live response vs investigation package: an interactive session versus a collected snapshot.
- Analytics tier vs data lake: data for active detection versus cheaper long retention.
Read the constraint
Most wrong answers are plausible but break one stated condition: no custom code, least privilege, device stays isolated, minimise cost, near real time. Underline the condition before reading the options. If two options both work, the condition decides.
KQL speed
Practise reading queries aloud in plain language. When a question shows four queries, check in this order: the table, the time column (Timestamp versus TimeGenerated), the filter, the aggregation, the projected columns. Most wrong options fail at the first or second check.
Use the official free tools
Take the Microsoft practice assessment and open the exam sandbox once, so the interface and question types hold no surprises. See the study resources for what else is verified to exist.
During the exam
- Answer the case study questions after you have read the whole scenario once; keep notes of key facts.
- For yes/no series, you usually cannot return to an answered item.
- Do not spend more than two minutes on one question; mark it and move on.
- Expect preview features occasionally, and remember the exam is updated in English first: the English outline changes on October 21, 2026.
Common traps
- Picking a Defender product when the scenario is clearly Sentinel, or the reverse.
- Choosing the strongest remediation (reset everyone, isolate everything) when a targeted one suffices.
- Forgetting that data must be ingested before a rule can use it.
- Treating AI-generated incident summaries as final.
Before exam day
Do a full timed practice run, review every wrong answer by reading why the correct option is right, and read the exam day guide. Use the exam format page to check the mechanics.
