Is SC-200 worth it? Who should take it
SC-200 is worth taking if your job or target job is in security operations: triaging alerts, investigating incidents, hunting for threats or engineering detections with Microsoft tools. It is a role-based associate credential, and Microsoft describes the role it validates clearly. It is less useful if you work mainly on building preventive controls or on compliance, where other exams fit better.
What the certification shows
Passing earns the Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate credential. According to Microsoft, the holder is a security operations analyst who reduces organisational risk by triaging, responding to incidents, hunting for threats and engineering detections, using Defender XDR, Sentinel, Entra ID, Purview and Defender for Cloud workload protections, and performing hunting with KQL.
In practice that means you can show an employer or client that you have covered the main Microsoft SOC tooling and can write KQL. It does not replace experience. The credential renews free each year, which also keeps you current.
Who should take it
| If you are… | Worth it? |
|---|---|
| A SOC analyst on a Microsoft stack | Yes, it matches the daily work |
| A Microsoft 365 or Azure admin moving into security | Yes, a structured route into SOC tools |
| A threat hunter or detection engineer | Yes, especially for KQL and Sentinel |
| A consultant implementing Defender and Sentinel | Yes, it proves product depth |
| New to IT with no security background | Start with SC-900 |
| Focused on building cloud security controls | Consider SC-500 first |
| Focused on identity administration | Consider SC-300 |
| Focused on Purview, data protection and DLP | Consider SC-401 |
Reasons to take it
- It maps to a defined job role, so it is easy to explain.
- It gives structure to learning a large product set.
- Its coverage is current: the outline includes Security Copilot, agentic AI investigation and the Sentinel data lake.
- The practice assessment is free and the renewal is free.
- It is a recognised, vendor-backed exam delivered through Pearson VUE.
Reasons to wait
- If your organisation uses other SIEM and XDR tools exclusively, the product knowledge transfers only partly, though concepts and KQL skills do help.
- If you are new to security, build the fundamentals first.
- The English exam changes on October 21, 2026. If you are about to study, use the new outline from the start.
What it costs
The price is set per country or region and shown at booking. Budget also for lab costs, mainly Sentinel ingestion, and set a budget alert. See certification costs for how Microsoft exam prices compare.
What it does not guarantee
A pass does not guarantee a job or a particular pay level, and this guide does not quote salary numbers because Microsoft does not publish them. Hiring managers look for hands-on skill, so pair the exam with real or lab incident work.
Next steps
Check the exam format, decide whether the analyst or engineer route suits you with SC-200 vs SC-500, and use the study plan if you go ahead.
