SAP-C03 prerequisites: what you need first
The SAP-C03 exam guide names no required certification, but its target candidate description sets a high bar: “2 or more years of experience using AWS services to design and implement cloud solutions”. That is the Professional level showing: the questions are long scenarios and assume you have made trade-offs on real systems. This page sets out what the guide says, which experience carries the most weight and what you can ignore, before you commit to the study plan.
What AWS says
The guide describes a candidate who can:
- evaluate cloud application requirements and make architectural recommendations for deploying applications on AWS;
- provide expert guidance on architectural design that extends across multiple applications and projects within a complex organization;
- work with architectures built for the cloud, serverless architectures and AI-integrated architectures in multi-account environments.
The exam validates advanced technical skills in designing optimized solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Unlike the foundational and associate exams, the guide does not list a set of recommended general IT knowledge. The experience statement is the requirement.
The background that helps
Having designed, not only operated
The question stems ask you to pick the best of several workable designs under constraints such as cost, downtime, compliance and migration timeline. That judgement comes from having compared options. If your experience is mostly running existing systems, spend time on design reviews and the Well-Architected pillars first.
Multiple accounts and organizations
The guide mentions multi-account environments directly. Know why organizations split workloads across accounts, how permissions and policies are applied across them, and how networking and logging are shared. The security, compliance and governance guide shows where this appears.
Breadth across services
Networking, storage, databases, compute, messaging, serverless and observability all feature. You do not need to master every service, but you should know the main one in each area and the usual alternatives. The cloud-native architecture guide is a good gap check.
Migration and resilience thinking
Recovery objectives, multi-Region patterns, and moving existing workloads. See the resilience and migration guide.
Cost awareness
Pricing models and how design choices change spend, covered in the cost-optimized architecture guide.
AI integration at an architect level
The guide mentions AI-integrated architectures, so know where managed AI services fit in a design. See below for what is not expected.
What you do not need
The guide lists knowledge and tasks the candidate is not expected to have. The list is non-exhaustive.
| Out of scope | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| In-depth knowledge of operating systems | No OS internals |
| AI/ML model training, fine-tuning and data science workflows | You integrate AI; you do not build models |
| Security incident forensics and detailed threat investigation | Design security, not investigate breaches |
| Application code development and debugging | Reading a snippet is fine; writing code is not tested |
No other certification is stated as required, so you do not need to hold an Associate certificate, although the Associate-level material is useful groundwork.
Quick self-check
- Have I designed a solution for stated requirements and defended it against an alternative?
- Can I explain how multiple AWS accounts are governed?
- Can I describe an approach to a Region-level failure and its recovery trade-offs?
- Have I planned or carried out a migration of a workload to AWS?
- Can I name two ways to cut cost on a running workload without hurting reliability?
Fewer than three “yes” answers means the four-week plan is too short. Take the six to eight week version suggested in the study plan, with hands-on labs for the gaps.
