Is SAP-C03 hard? What to expect

Updated October 30, 2026

SAP-C03 is one of the more demanding AWS exams because it is Professional level: AWS recommends two or more years designing and implementing solutions on AWS, and the exam consists of 75 scenario questions in 180 minutes. The difficulty comes from breadth and trade-off reasoning, not from obscure facts. No pass rate is published by AWS, and none is quoted here.

What AWS says about the level

AWS places SAP-C03 at Professional level, above Associate. The target candidate evaluates cloud application requirements, recommends architectures and guides design across multiple projects in a complex organisation. The announcement for the updated exam adds experience guiding cloud-native, serverless and AI-integrated architectures.

The outgoing SAP-C02 guide states that the exam is based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework and describes four domains: organisational complexity, new solutions, continuous improvement and migration. SAP-C03 has five domains: Architecture Design and Implementation Built for the Cloud (25%); Security, Compliance, and Governance (25%); Cost-Optimized Architecture Design (15%); Resilience, Migration, and Business Continuity (15%); Operational Excellence and Automation (20%). AWS does not rank them by difficulty, but the two 25% domains are half of the scored content. Passing requires a scaled score of 720 out of 1,000 on SAP-C03 (750 on SAP-C02), and scoring is compensatory, so a weak domain can be offset by a strong one.

Where the difficulty comes from

SourceWhat it looks like
Length2.4 minutes per question on average, with scenarios of several sentences and long answer options
Several valid answersMultiple options work technically; one best meets cost, operations or time constraints
Multiple responseYou must select all correct answers to get credit on SAP-C02-style questions; partial knowledge scores nothing
BreadthNetworking, security, data, compute, migration, cost and operations in one exam
New areasGenerative and agentic AI, resilience engineering, data and analytics, and post-quantum cryptography are named in the SAP-C03 announcement (11 new generative AI skills, 7 cloud-native, 6 DevSecOps and observability, 3 data and analytics)
EnduranceThree hours of sustained reading

What is not hard

  • Memorising limits. You need judgement more than numbers, although you must know what services can and cannot do.
  • Writing code or policies from scratch. The exam reads architecture, not programming.
  • Frontend or operating-system depth. The SAP-C02 guide lists frontend development for mobile apps and in-depth operating-system knowledge as out of scope.

Who finds it easier or harder

Easier: people who have designed multi-account environments, run migrations, managed disaster-recovery plans or been accountable for AWS bills. Experience gives you the instinct for which requirement matters in a scenario.

Harder: people who know one area well (for example only serverless, or only networking), and people who have only passed Associate exams by memorising features. Professional questions test the interactions between areas.

For the new content, the first obstacle is not depth but unfamiliarity. If you have not yet used Bedrock, Fault Injection Service or Lake Formation, spend time with them. The domain pages (cloud-native, security, cost, resilience, operations) explain the reasoning each requires. The details of what is assessed are in the task statements of the AWS exam guide.

Readiness check

You are probably ready when you can, without notes:

  1. Compare backup and restore, pilot light, warm standby and multi-site recovery, and choose by RTO, RPO and cost.
  2. Explain how an SCP differs from an IAM policy and a permission boundary.
  3. Choose between VPC peering, Transit Gateway and PrivateLink for a given scenario.
  4. Pick a migration strategy and transfer method for a given dataset and timeline.
  5. Reduce a bill without breaking a requirement.
  6. Describe where a generative AI feature belongs in an architecture and which controls it needs.

Time yourself on 20 questions at 2.4 minutes each. If you run out of time, the problem is reading strategy; if you finish but miss many, the problem is knowledge. The sample questions are a start.

How to reduce the difficulty

  • Read the last line of the question first, then the requirements, then the options.
  • Underline constraints: minimum operational overhead, lowest cost, least change, fastest.
  • Eliminate options that break a hard requirement before comparing the rest.
  • Build things. See the study plan and study resources.
  • Practise stamina: take a full 180-minute session once before the day.
