Is SAP-C03 worth it? Value and cost

Updated October 30, 2026

SAP-C03 is worth it if your work is designing AWS architectures for complex organisations and you want that validated at the highest solutions-architect level AWS offers. It costs 300 USD per attempt, takes weeks of preparation, and lasts three years. It is a poor fit if you do not design or review architectures, since the experience it assumes is two or more years on AWS. This page uses only statements from AWS; it gives no salary or hiring claims.

What the certification is, per AWS

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional validates advanced skills in designing optimised AWS solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework (wording from the SAP-C02 guide). For SAP-C03, AWS describes validation of cloud-native architectures with AI/ML integration, security and compliance architectures, cost optimization, resilience and business continuity, and operational excellence, which matches the five domains in the exam guide. The SAP-C03 announcement describes a candidate who assesses requirements, recommends architectures and guides cloud-native, serverless and AI-integrated design. AWS lists target roles as solutions architects, cloud architects, infrastructure architects and technical leads.

The cost side

ItemFigure from AWS
Exam fee300 USD per attempt, plus possible foreign exchange charges
Retake14 calendar days wait, full fee each time
Validity3 years
Discount50% off the next AWS exam after earning one certification
RenewalPass the latest version (3 years) or maintain on Skill Builder (1 year, last 90 days)

The largest cost is time. Plan several weeks of regular study; the study plan uses four. Compare with other vendors on the certification costs page.

Who benefits most

  • Architects in consulting or platform teams who must justify designs across accounts, regions and compliance regimes.
  • Engineers moving into architecture. The exam organises the decisions you already make into a framework.
  • Holders of the Associate architect certificate who want to prove depth. The 50% discount applies after any AWS certification.
  • People working on migration or modernization programmes, since migration is a core part of the outgoing exam and resilience is a named area of the update.

Who should think twice

  • Beginners. Without hands-on AWS work the long scenario questions are hard to answer. An Associate-level exam builds the base.
  • Specialists in one niche. If you work only on machine learning, MLA-C02 or another specialty fits better; if you work on Azure, AZ-305 is the closer architect exam.
  • Anyone who wants a quick credential. Preparation is the point; the pass is a by-product.

What preparation gives you regardless of the result

Because the exam is built on the Well-Architected Framework, preparing means practising trade-offs: recovery targets versus cost, central control versus team autonomy, managed services versus flexibility. The updated exam adds generative AI, resilience engineering and data topics, so study also covers areas that are changing quickly.

SAP-C02 or SAP-C03

Both lead to the same certification. AWS suggests SAP-C02 for candidates already prepared and SAP-C03 for those who want cloud-native, GenAI/agentic AI and modern resilience engineering skills validated. SAP-C02 can be taken until November 16, 2026; SAP-C03 delivery starts on November 17, 2026. See SAP-C03 vs SAP-C02 for the differences. The credential from either stays active through its own expiration date.

A way to decide

Answer three questions:

  1. Do you design or review AWS architectures at least monthly?
  2. Is there a specific use for the credential (a role, a project, a partner requirement, an employer’s requirement)?
  3. Can you commit weekly study time for four to eight weeks?

Three yes answers make it a reasonable investment. If the second is a no, define the use first. For what roles AWS associates with the certification, see the career page.
