SAP-C03 career: roles and next steps
AWS ties the Solutions Architect – Professional certification to architecture roles: solutions architects, cloud architects, infrastructure architects and technical leads. The AWS announcement for SAP-C03 describes someone who assesses cloud application requirements, recommends architectures on AWS and guides cloud-native, serverless and AI-integrated design. This page keeps to those AWS statements and makes no claims about pay or hiring.
Roles named by AWS
| Role | How the exam relates, per AWS |
|---|---|
| Solutions architect | The core target: evaluating requirements and recommending deployment architectures |
| Cloud architect | Design that spans multiple applications and projects in a complex organisation |
| Infrastructure architect | Networking, resilience, migration and operations at scale |
| Technical lead | Guiding design decisions for teams |
The SAP-C02 guide frames the target candidate as someone who provides expert guidance on architectural design that extends across multiple applications and projects within a complex organisation. That is a description of influence beyond a single workload.
What the certification shows
It shows that you can reason about AWS architectures against the Well-Architected Framework: choosing between valid designs under cost, security, resilience and operational constraints. The updated exam adds generative and agentic AI, resilience engineering, cloud-native patterns, DevSecOps and observability, data and analytics, and post-quantum cryptography, so the credential signals awareness of those areas. AWS also lists target roles for SAP-C03 including Cloud Architects leading multi-account governance strategies and Infrastructure Architects implementing modern resilience and security patterns, which line up with the security and governance and the resilience domains of the exam guide.
What it does not show
- Hands-on delivery. It is a multiple-choice exam. It does not prove you can build, debug or operate the design.
- Seniority or leadership. AWS lists experience as recommended, but the certificate is not a record of it.
- Depth in one service. The exam is wide. Specialisation is shown elsewhere, for instance by MLA-C02 for machine-learning engineering.
- Non-AWS skills. For Azure architecture, see AZ-305.
Using it in practice
- Pair it with evidence. Keep a short portfolio of architecture decision records, diagrams and migration or recovery results you have led, with confidential details removed.
- Name the change. The certification is recorded in your AWS Certification account. If you hold SAP-C03, say which areas it adds beyond the older exam.
- Use the 50% voucher. AWS gives a discount on your next AWS exam after earning one certification, which lowers the cost of a second credential.
What AWS lists next
AWS offers other certifications across its role-based paths. On its recertification page, the Professional-level credentials listed are Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer and Generative AI Developer. Common sensible next steps from an architect base:
- DevOps Engineer – Professional if your work is delivery pipelines and operations.
- Generative AI Developer – Professional if the generative AI content of SAP-C03 is where your work is heading.
- Specialty certifications in security, networking or data, where deeper specialisation is the goal.
Check the AWS certification site for the current list and requirements. The AWS AI certification path lays out the AI side.
Keeping it current
The credential lasts three years. Renewal is by passing the latest exam version, or by maintaining on Skill Builder for one more year during the last 90 days before expiry. The renewal and retakes page explains this. Because architecture changes quickly, treat renewal as a chance to study what is new, not a formality.
