PL-300 renewal and retake rules

Updated October 9, 2026

The Power BI Data Analyst Associate is valid for 12 months from the day you meet its requirements, and you keep it by passing a free, unproctored renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before it expires. PL-300 failures follow a separate rule: wait 24 hours after the first failed attempt, then 14 days between later attempts, with at most five attempts in 12 months. Both sets of rules come from Microsoft’s own policy pages, summarised below with what they mean for a Power BI analyst. For the roles the credential points to, see PL-300 career.

The 12-month clock on the Power BI Data Analyst Associate

The certification page lists “Renewal Frequency: 12 months”, and Microsoft’s expiration policy says associate, expert and specialty certifications are valid for one year from the date you complete all requirements. PL-300 is a single-exam certification, so the clock starts when you pass the exam. If you earned it through a beta exam, the dates are based on the day the beta was rescored, about ten days after it goes live.

Fundamentals certifications never expire; PL-300 is not one of them, so the annual cycle applies for as long as you want to show it as active.

Renewing: window, assessment and what it costs

QuestionMicrosoft’s answer
CostFree
When can you startSix months before the expiry date, and not earlier
FormatOnline, unproctored, open book, about 45 minutes
AttemptsUnlimited; retry immediately after the first miss, then wait at least 24 hours between later tries
ResultExpiry date moves one year from the previous expiry date, updated immediately on your Learn profile
LanguagesSame as the exam, so ten for PL-300

Two points are easy to miss. First, passing early does not waste time, because the extension is counted from the old expiry date. Second, there is no other route: retaking PL-300 itself or passing a beta exam does not renew it, and Microsoft states there are no exceptions. Microsoft also says it may email you when the window opens, but only if your Learn profile has an email address and you agreed to its communication terms, so a calendar entry is safer.

The renewal assessment is aligned with exam updates and focuses on recent changes. For PL-300, the current outline is dated April 20, 2026, with minor changes to getting data, report usability and storytelling, and workspace management. Power BI ships monthly, so the free modules on your renewal page are the quickest way to see what moved since your last pass. Items on the renewal assessment may be drafted with AI but are reviewed by subject matter experts, according to the FAQ.

If you miss the date

After expiry you can no longer renew. The expiration policy says you have to re-earn the certification by passing the required exam again, which here means a new PL-300 attempt with a full exam fee. The fee is set per country or region and shown when you book; see certification costs for the wider picture. The retake policy also says a passed exam cannot be retaken unless the certification has expired, so booking is only possible once it has lapsed.

Does DP-600 renew PL-300, or the other way round?

No. Microsoft states that the only way to renew a certification is its own renewal assessment. Passing DP-600 earns the separate Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate and carries its own 12-month clock, and Microsoft’s FAQ says each certification must be renewed separately. The reverse also holds: a fresh PL-300 pass does not extend a DP-600 you already hold. Holding both means two reminders a year. The English DP-600 exam changes on October 19, 2026 (see its October 2026 update), so its renewal content follows that update, not PL-300’s April one.

Retake rules for the PL-300 exam

Microsoft’s exam retake policy for role-based exams reads:

  1. Fail once: wait 24 hours.
  2. Later attempts, up to five: wait 14 days between each.
  3. No more than five attempts in 12 months, counted from the first attempt. After five failures, you can try again 12 months from the date of the first attempt.
  4. Each retake needs a new payment where a fee applies.
  5. A waiting-period waiver exists only for internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number; no other reason qualifies.

These rules are the same for Microsoft’s other role-based exams. A practical consequence for PL-300: because the 14-day gap applies after the second attempt, a failed second try costs a fortnight, so the first retake is the cheapest place to learn from your score report. Re-study the weakest domain (usually modelling or the service side) before you rebook.

Registration and accommodations

Microsoft recommends scheduling with a personal Microsoft account, because records tied to a work or school account are unrecoverable if you leave the organisation, which matters if your renewal history is tied to your career. If PL-300 is not offered in your preferred language, you can request an extra 30 minutes, and the certification page links to a separate accommodations request for assistive devices or modified exam experience. Microsoft does not state an appeal process for scores on these pages, so none is described here.

When Microsoft retires a credential

Microsoft reserves the right to retire exams and certifications. A retired credential stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires, or for two years after retirement if it has no expiry. If a retirement date falls before your expiry date, Learn tells you to renew before retirement, and the renewal window may be shortened. Nothing on the PL-300 pages indicates a retirement; check the exam changes tracker if you plan far ahead.
