PL-300 vs DP-600: which exam first?

Updated October 9, 2026

Take PL-300 if your job is building reports and semantic models for business users in Power BI; take DP-600 if you design and manage the analytics platform underneath them in Microsoft Fabric. PL-300 is the analyst exam: Power Query, DAX, report design and the Power BI service. DP-600 is the Fabric analytics engineer exam: lakehouses, warehouses, SQL, KQL, DAX and enterprise-scale semantic models. Neither certification page lists the other as a prerequisite, so you can start with either, but most people who need both take PL-300 first.

The DP-600 weights above come from the skills outline Microsoft published for the English exam as of October 19, 2026. Microsoft’s certification page says the English version is updated on that date, so check the current study guide before you rely on the percentages.

Two things stand out. DP-600 has no report-design domain: building visuals, bookmarks and drillthrough is a PL-300 skill. And DP-600 puts nearly half the weight on preparing data, which in Fabric means lakehouses, warehouses, views, stored procedures, and querying with SQL and KQL, not clicking through the Power Query editor.

Same topic, different question

Security. PL-300 asks how to restrict a report so each manager sees their own region: a row-level security role with a DAX filter and the right workspace role. DP-600 asks about access control across a whole Fabric workspace and its items, including row-level, column-level, object-level and file-level access.

Semantic models. PL-300 asks you to build a sound model: relationships, a date table, measures, and performance basics. DP-600 goes further into storage modes, composite models, calculation groups, Direct Lake behaviour and incremental refresh at enterprise scale.

Data preparation. PL-300 means transforming a source with Power Query: merging, appending, unpivoting, fixing data types. DP-600 means shaping data in a store: denormalising, aggregating, merging and joining with SQL, and choosing between data stores.

Lifecycle. DP-600 includes version control, deployment pipelines and the XMLA endpoint. PL-300 has none of that; its lifecycle topic is publishing to a workspace and distributing content through apps.

Where DP-700 fits

DP-700, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, sits on the engineering side: ingestion, transformation with PySpark, SQL and KQL, orchestration, streaming, and monitoring. It has no Power BI report-building content at all. If you prefer pipelines and notebooks to reports and measures, look at DP-700 rather than PL-300.

Which one should you take?

If youTake
Build reports and dashboards for business usersPL-300
Are new to Power BI and want a recognised first credentialPL-300
Design lakehouses, warehouses and enterprise semantic models in FabricDP-600
Write SQL or KQL daily and own the platformDP-600
Move and transform data with pipelines and SparkDP-700
Do both analyst and platform workPL-300 first, then DP-600

PL-300 first is the sensible default for a mixed role. The DAX, relationships and semantic model design you learn for PL-300 carry straight into DP-600, so most of the overlap works in your favour. Going the other way, you will have to learn report design from scratch.
