Network+ rewards building a network, breaking it and fixing it more than any other activity. Troubleshooting is the heaviest domain at 24%, and troubleshooting is not a thing you can read. CompTIA’s official objectives plus a home lab, virtual or physical, is the combination that passes this exam.

Start with the official material

The exam objectives PDF. CompTIA publishes a detailed objectives document listing every acronym and concept that can appear. It is exhaustive and free, and it is the definitive scope. Download it first.

Check you are studying the right version. N10-009 superseded N10-008. Material for the old version still circulates widely and the objectives shifted. Verify the version on anything you use, and check which version your voucher is for.

Build a lab

This is the part that separates passes from near-misses.

Virtual works fine. Network simulation software or a few VMs with virtual switches will cover most of it at no cost. Physical kit is nicer but not required.

Things worth doing until they are boring:

• Subnet by hand, repeatedly, until a /26 boundary is instant. Subnetting questions are free marks if you have drilled them and a time sink if you have not.
• Configure VLANs and a trunk between two switches, then break the trunk and observe what fails.
• Cause a duplex mismatch and look at the error counters. The classic late-collision question stops being trivia.
• Break DNS and confirm the symptom: works by IP, fails by name. That pattern appears repeatedly.
• Run traceroute against a failing path and read where it stops.

Worth paying for

A practice test with explanations, for diagnosis. Start with the free 20-question test here, weighted to the real domains.

A video course, if you are new to networking and need structure. This is one exam where a good course earns its price for a beginner, because the material is broad and the objectives document is dry.

A voucher bundle, possibly. Prices vary considerably by region and route, and CompTIA does not publish one global figure — check your own country rather than trusting a number you read elsewhere.

What to skip

Braindumps. CompTIA is unusually aggressive about this and has revoked certifications for it. They also fail you in a subtler way: Network+ performance-based questions require doing rather than recognising.

Memorising every acronym in the objectives. Understand what each does and where it sits. The exam asks you to apply concepts, not recite expansions.

Vendor-specific CLI depth. Network+ is vendor-neutral. Learning one vendor’s command syntax in detail is study for a different certification.

A sensible order

1. Download the objectives. Confirm the version.
2. Drill subnetting until it is automatic.
3. Work through a course or the objectives systematically.
4. Build the lab and break the five things above.
5. Take the practice test. Pay particular attention to how the troubleshooting questions go, since that is the heaviest domain.
