N10-009 study plan: pass Network+ in 6 weeks
Six weeks at 6–8 hours a week. This assumes some IT exposure — CompTIA recommends A+ plus 9 to 12 months in a support role, and the plan is realistic for someone around that level.
Two things run through every week: subnetting practice and performance-based question practice. Both are skills rather than knowledge, and both need repetition rather than reading.
Week 1: networking concepts, part one (23%)
- The OSI model — seven layers, what lives at each, and which device or protocol belongs where. This is the mental framework the whole exam uses.
- The TCP/IP model and how it maps across.
- Topologies and network types: LAN, WAN, WLAN, and the cloud models.
- Cables and connectors, and the distance and speed limits that make a scenario answerable.
Week 2: networking concepts, part two, and subnetting
- IPv4 addressing: classes, private ranges, CIDR notation.
- Subnetting — the skill most people underestimate. Practise until you can subnet without a calculator, quickly.
- IPv6 fundamentals.
- Ports and protocols: the common ones, their numbers, and what they do. These recur across every other domain.
- DHCP, DNS and NAT.
Subnetting deserves daily practice from here to the exam. Ten minutes a day beats one long session.
Week 3: network implementation (20%)
- Routing: static versus dynamic, and the common protocols at a conceptual level.
- Switching: VLANs, trunking, spanning tree, port configuration.
- Wireless: standards, frequencies, channels, interference and placement.
- Physical installation: racks, power, cooling, cabling practice.
Week 4: network operations (19%) and security (14%)
Operations:
- Monitoring, SNMP, logging and baselines.
- Documentation — diagrams, labelling, and why it is examinable.
- Availability: redundancy, high availability, backups and disaster recovery concepts.
- Change management as it applies to networks.
Security:
- Common attacks and their network signatures.
- Hardening devices; secure protocols over insecure ones.
- Physical and logical access control, and segmentation.
- VPNs and remote access.
Security is only 14% here — Security+ is where it goes deep.
Week 5: troubleshooting (24%)
The largest domain, and the one you cannot learn from a book alone.
- The CompTIA troubleshooting methodology, in order. Know the steps and their sequence — questions ask what to do next, and the answer is usually the next step in the method.
- Common tools:
ping,traceroute/tracert,ipconfig/ifconfig,nslookup/dig,netstat,arp, and cable testers. - Connectivity problems: physical, addressing, routing, name resolution.
- Wireless problems: signal, interference, channel overlap, authentication.
- Performance problems: bandwidth, latency, duplex mismatch, bottlenecks.
Work through the layers. Most diagnostic questions are answerable by asking which OSI layer the symptom points at.
Week 6: practice and repair
- Full practice exam under real conditions: 90 minutes, no notes. Time pressure is part of what you are training.
- Practise performance-based questions specifically, and practise leaving them until last.
- Sort mistakes by domain and rebuild the weakest.
- Second practice exam. Book when you are consistently above 80% and finishing inside the hour and a half.

The two skills to drill
Subnetting. It is not a topic you revise once. Ten minutes daily for six weeks turns it from a stumbling block into free marks.
Ports and protocols. Flashcards. They appear in concepts, implementation, security and troubleshooting — far beyond their own section.
If time runs short, protect weeks 1, 2 and 5. Concepts and troubleshooting are 47% of the exam between them, and the concepts underpin everything else.
