MLA-C02 renewal and retake rules
AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate is valid for three years, and AWS lists three ways to extend it: pass the latest version of the exam (3 more years), pass the Generative AI Developer - Professional exam (3 more years), or “maintain” it on AWS Skill Builder (1 more year, only within 90 days of expiry). After a failed attempt you wait 14 calendar days and pay the full fee again. The rules come from AWS’s recertification page and after-testing policy.
Three renewal routes for the ML Engineer credential
| Route | Result | Conditions AWS states |
|---|---|---|
| Pass the latest version of the exam | +3 years | Certification must be active. Can use the 50% discount voucher in your AWS Certification Account |
| Pass AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional | +3 years | Certification must be active |
| Maintain on AWS Skill Builder | +1 year | Active certification, an active Skill Builder subscription (monthly, annual or team), and no more than 90 days left before expiry |
The new period is counted from the date you complete the action, not from the old expiry date. Renewing early therefore does not carry leftover months forward. For the exam route, that makes the best timing late in the cycle, not early.
The recertification page gives no expiry date for any holder; your own date is in your AWS Certification Account. The recertification page does not describe what happens after expiry or any grace period, so treat the date as final. The Skill Builder price is not stated on that page and is not quoted here.
Beta results, MLA-C01 holders and the version swap
MLA-C02 replaced MLA-C01 on a fixed timetable, which affects renewal wording. AWS’s announcement and exam guide give these dates:
- 1 September 2026: beta registration opens (English only)
- 28 September 2026: last day to take MLA-C01 in English
- 29 September 2026: MLA-C02 beta delivery begins
- Early 2027: the standard MLA-C02 for all languages. The blog says “early 2027”, and AWS’s credential page still lists the general availability dates as TBD. Treat any exact January date seen elsewhere as unconfirmed.
Anyone who passed MLA-C01 keeps the credential until its original expiry, because AWS says passing before retirement does not shorten validity. When that holder renews through “the latest version of the exam”, that will be MLA-C02 or whatever follows it. The career page lists what the new outline adds.
Passing the beta earns the same certification, active for three years, according to AWS’s before-testing policy. Beta results arrive within five business days. Note the difference from the standard exam, which the guide says has a pass or fail designation but not for the beta.
What AWS says about failing, waiting and paying again
- Waiting period: 14 calendar days after a failed attempt.
- Attempt limit: none.
- Fee: the full registration fee on every attempt. AWS publishes no retake discount on the policy page. The 50% voucher mentioned above belongs to recertification, not to failed attempts.
- After a pass: the same exam cannot be retaken for two years. If AWS issues a new exam guide and series code, the new version can be taken.
- Beta: a beta can be taken once. A candidate who fails it waits for the standard version. This guide found no AWS statement on whether someone who passed the beta may also sit the standard version, so ask AWS Certification support before relying on it.
The cost angle is specific to this exam: the beta fee is 75 USD against 150 USD for MLA-C01 on AWS’s page, while the standard C02 price has not been published. A candidate who fails the beta therefore loses the discount for the next attempt. The exam format page has the beta figures, and certification costs compares vendors.
Score report, language and support rules
Associate exams use a passing scaled score of 720 on a scale of 100 to 1,000, and results post within five business days. The score report is a PDF in the Exam History tab. AWS warns against over-reading section-level feedback. The policy pages describe no appeals process.
Non-native English speakers can request the 30-minute “ESL +30” accommodation once, before registering, and it then applies to later bookings. Disability accommodations must be requested before scheduling each exam. Rescheduling is allowed up to 24 hours ahead, twice per appointment, and a late cancellation or no-show forfeits the fee. These rules are the same for other AWS exams, as is the retake policy. What is unique here is the 2026 transition: the beta is English only, while Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese stay on MLA-C01 until the standard C02 arrives.
A renewal plan for an MLA-C02 holder
- Note the expiry date in your AWS Certification Account and set a reminder about six months before.
- If you want a stronger credential, plan the Generative AI Developer - Professional; one pass renews this certification too.
- If you just need to stay current at low effort, check whether the Skill Builder route is open: it only opens in the last 90 days and adds one year.
- Use the 50% voucher if your account shows one, and read how exam changes are announced so that the “latest version” does not surprise you.
The comparable AWS-wide logic for the foundational credential is on the AIF-C01 renewal page.
