DVA-C03 prerequisites: what you need first
The DVA-C03 exam guide names no required certification. It describes a target candidate with “1 or more years of hands-on experience in developing and maintaining applications by using AWS services”, and it lists general IT knowledge on top of that, starting with proficiency in at least one high-level programming language. This is a recommendation, not a gate, but the questions assume it. Read the list below, then check yourself against it before starting the study plan.
What AWS says
The guide’s target candidate description has two parts. The first is the experience level above. The second is a list of recommended general IT knowledge:
- proficiency in at least one high-level programming language;
- understanding of application lifecycle management;
- basic understanding of cloud-focused application development;
- experience using application development tools, including AI tools;
- familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows.
For AWS knowledge, the candidate should be able to develop and secure applications using service APIs, the AWS CLI and SDKs, use a CI/CD pipeline to deploy applications, use AI tools and services to support development, testing and release, and integrate managed AI services into applications.
The background that helps
One language, used for real
Questions show short code, CLI commands and configuration, not full programs. You will read them faster if you have written and debugged an application in Python, JavaScript, Java or a similar language, including handling errors and calling an API.
Calling AWS from code
Using an SDK, signing requests with credentials, handling retries and paging through results. Hands-on time here matters more than any reading, because scenario questions hinge on small behaviours such as what happens on throttling.
Core services used by developers
The development guide covers the main services. Before you start, you should have at least created a Lambda function, stored data in DynamoDB or S3, and put an API in front of them.
Delivery pipelines
You do not need to design pipelines, but you should have pushed code through a build and deploy flow and understand environments, versions and rollbacks. The testing and deployment guide builds on that.
Security basics
IAM roles and policies, and keeping secrets out of code. The security guide assumes you already know what a role is.
What you do not need
The guide explicitly lists job tasks the candidate is not expected to perform. These are non-exhaustive:
| Out of scope | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Design architectures (distributed systems, microservices, schemas) | You use services; you are not asked to architect systems |
| Design and create CI/CD pipelines | Using a pipeline is expected, building one is not |
| Administer IAM users and groups | Roles for applications yes, user administration no |
| Administer servers and operating systems | No server management |
| Select foundation models, engineer prompts, design RAG architectures | AI is about using managed services in applications |
| Design AI safety frameworks, guardrails or governance | Out of scope |
| Design ETL pipelines | Out of scope |
| Design AWS networking infrastructure | Out of scope |
No other AWS certification is listed as required.
Quick self-check
- Have I deployed code to AWS and fixed an error using logs?
- Can I explain why an application should use an IAM role instead of access keys in code?
- Have I called an AWS API through an SDK or the CLI?
- Have I used a CI/CD pipeline, even a simple one, to release a change?
- Have I used an AI coding tool and checked its output?
Three or more “yes” answers: start the plan as written. Fewer: spend two to three weeks building a small serverless application first, then begin. If you are coming from the cloud basics side, look at DVA-C03 vs DVA-C02 after this to decide which version to sit.
Where this leads
Next, read the exam format, then the study plan and how hard the exam is. Related certifications on the site include AIF-C01, which covers the AI side at a foundational level, and SAP-C03 for the architect track.
