Is DVA-C03 worth it? Who should take it
DVA-C03 is worth taking if you build applications on AWS and want a credential that matches that work. It validates developing, testing, deploying and debugging cloud applications, costs 150 USD, and stays valid for three years. It is less useful if you do not write code for AWS. This page relies on AWS’s own statements and quotes no salary or hiring figures, which AWS does not publish for the exam.
What the credential covers
AWS describes the Developer - Associate certification as validating a candidate’s ability to develop and optimise applications on AWS, package and deploy using CI/CD workflows, secure application code and data, and identify and resolve application issues. The updated exam adds AI security, AI-assisted development skills in three domains and container skills, according to the AWS exam guide. The four domains are weighted 30% development with AWS services, 26% security, 22% testing and deployment and 22% troubleshooting and optimization.
Who benefits most
- Application developers building on AWS. The scope mirrors daily work: APIs, functions, data stores, messaging, security and delivery.
- Backend and full-stack engineers. AWS names software developers, backend engineers, DevOps practitioners and full-stack developers among the target roles in its announcement of the update.
- Developers adding AI features. The new tasks on AI security and AI-assisted development address work that many teams are starting. The exam guide puts model selection, prompt engineering and RAG design out of scope.
- DevOps engineers moving closer to code. The exam tests SDK, API and pipeline use at a developer level.
Who may prefer something else
| Situation | Consider |
|---|---|
| No IT experience | AWS Cloud Practitioner first; AWS’s exam page recommends it for people with no IT experience |
| Operations focus, not code | AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate, named by AWS as a next step |
| Data pipelines | AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate, also named by AWS |
| Machine learning engineering | The MLA-C02 exam |
| AI literacy without building | The AIF-C01 exam |
Costs and effort
| Exam fee | 150 USD (currency conversion and similar costs may apply) |
| Format | 65 questions, 130 minutes, passing score 720 of 1,000 |
| Validity | 3 years |
| Recommended experience | 1 or more years of hands-on development with AWS services |
| Preparation | The study plan assumes four weeks of focused study alongside that experience |
| After you pass | AWS states you receive a 50% discount on your next exam |
AWS resources are free to read, and practice builds may cost a little on your AWS account, so budget a small amount and delete resources afterward. See certification costs for how this compares with other vendors.
What the certificate does and does not show
It shows that you passed a proctored, scenario-based exam on developing for AWS against a minimum standard set by AWS. It does not show that you can design architectures, build pipelines from scratch or administer infrastructure; AWS lists those as out of scope for the target candidate. A repository or a deployed application shows what a credential cannot, so use both.
Timing considerations
AWS lists DVA-C02 as available until 30 November 2026 and DVA-C03 as in use from 1 December 2026. On registration, AWS’s 27 October 2026 blog post says it is open while a note on the exam guide says it opens December 1, 2026; check your AWS Certification account. The value of the credential does not depend on which version you hold: AWS says a DVA-C02 credential stays active through its original expiration date. The difference is content. See DVA-C03 vs DVA-C02 for what changes.
Renewal
The certification is valid for three years and can be renewed by passing the latest version of the exam or the DevOps Engineer - Professional exam, with a paid Skill Builder maintenance route adding one year. The details are on the renewal and retakes page.
Verdict
If your work involves writing, deploying or debugging applications on AWS, DVA-C03 is a direct match and a reasonable investment. If your work is mostly infrastructure, data or ML, an adjacent exam fits better. If you are unsure, read the exam format, try the sample questions and see how much feels familiar.
