DVA-C03 career: developer roles on AWS

Updated October 30, 2026

AWS positions the Developer - Associate certification for application builders: software developers, backend engineers, DevOps practitioners and full-stack developers, according to its announcement of DVA-C03. The AWS certification page frames the target as IT or cloud developer roles. This page uses AWS statements only and quotes no salary or demand figures.

Roles AWS names

Role named by AWSWhat the exam gives evidence forGap to close with other work
Software developerBuilding and debugging applications that use AWS servicesDomain and product knowledge
Backend engineerAPIs, data stores, messaging, security of service callsLarge-scale design
DevOps practitionerDeployment workflows, CI/CD use, troubleshooting and monitoringDesigning pipelines and platforms
Full-stack developerBackend services and their deploymentFront-end and user experience skills

AWS’s DVA-C03 exam guide says the target candidate has one or more years of hands-on experience developing and maintaining applications with AWS services. The credential therefore signals practice at that level, not an entry-level introduction. See the exam format for the requirements AWS recommends.

What a holder is not shown to do

The DVA-C03 guide lists tasks outside the target candidate’s expected skills: designing architectures such as distributed systems and database schemas, designing and creating CI/CD pipelines, administering IAM users and groups, administering servers and operating systems, designing ETL pipelines, designing AWS networking, and AI design tasks (selecting foundation models, engineering prompts, designing RAG architectures, AI safety frameworks and governance). Read that list as a reasonable limit on what an employer should infer: you can build and operate within a design, not necessarily own it.

For roles such as solutions architect, platform engineer or SRE, the certificate supports an application but a portfolio of designs and operated systems carries more weight.

What the update adds to your profile

AWS says the updated exam, weighted 30/26/22/22 across its four domains, adds AI security, adds AI-assisted development skills in Domains 1, 3 and 4 and adds container skills. In practical terms, a holder of the new version can point to evidence of working with AI features and AI tools securely and of using container workflows. AWS explicitly keeps selecting foundation models, engineering prompts, RAG design, AI safety frameworks, AI governance and SageMaker AI out of scope, so the credential is not an AI engineering one. For that, see the AWS AI certification path.

Next steps AWS names

AWS’s certification page lists these as next certifications after Developer - Associate:

  1. AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional. The natural step for delivery and operations at scale; it is also a renewal route for the Developer credential.
  2. AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate. For operational and monitoring depth.
  3. AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate. For data pipelines.

The page also notes that after earning one certification you receive a 50% discount on your next exam, and lists related credentials called AWS Serverless Demonstrated and AWS Agentic AI Demonstrated. Check AWS’s pages for what those require and whether they apply to you; this site has not verified their details.

Cross-vendor options exist if your team uses another cloud, for example AZ-400 for DevOps on Azure.

Making the credential count

  • Show the work. Link a repository or a deployed project that uses the services the exam covers, including a pipeline and its tests.
  • Name the scope honestly. “AWS Certified Developer - Associate, passed 2026” is accurate; claims about architecture or AI engineering are not supported by it.
  • Keep it current. The credential is valid for three years; see renewal and retakes.
  • Use the version you hold. Holders of DVA-C02 keep it through its original expiry, per AWS.

Whether to take it

Whether the investment is justified depends on your role and aims; is DVA-C03 worth it sets out costs, fit and alternatives. For fees across vendors, use certification costs. For salary and demand in your market, consult neutral sources such as national labour statistics and local job postings, since AWS publishes no pay figures for this certification.
