Is DP-800 worth it? Who should take it
DP-800 is worth it if you build or maintain applications on SQL Server, Azure SQL or SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric and want to show that you can add AI features to them securely. It validates a specific skill set: T-SQL and database design, security, tuning, CI/CD and vector search with RAG. It is less worth it if your work is mostly Python-based AI applications or large-scale lakehouse pipelines. This page uses only facts Microsoft publishes; it makes no salary or hiring claims.
What the certification says about you
The Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate credential is aimed at people who design and develop database solutions with structured and semi-structured data, integrate AI features into enterprise applications, and secure, optimize and deploy those databases. Microsoft’s audience profile lists collaboration with application developers, DBAs, architects, AI engineers, DevSecOps engineers and security and compliance administrators.
Who it is for
SQL developers. The core audience. You already write T-SQL; the exam adds vectors, external models and RAG, and it asks you to prove your security and delivery skills.
Database administrators moving toward development. The performance and security objectives will feel familiar. The CI/CD, JSON and AI sections are the growth areas.
Application developers on SQL backends. If your applications use a SQL database as the system of record and you want semantic search in it without adding a separate vector store, the exam maps directly to that work.
Fabric users. SQL databases in Fabric are in scope, and so are Copilot in Fabric and Fabric lakehouse MCP endpoints.
Who should pick something else
| If you | Consider instead |
|---|---|
| Build lakehouses, pipelines and notebooks in Fabric | DP-700 |
| Build AI apps and agents with Microsoft Foundry | AI-103 |
| Are new to AI and need the vocabulary first | AI-901 |
| Build Azure AI back-end services in code | AI-200 |
| Are new to Azure | AZ-900 |
What you get from preparing
Even without the credential, the preparation is useful. You will use security features that many teams skip, read execution plans, put a schema in source control, and learn where vector search belongs in an application. Those are skills your team can use the next day.
Costs and commitments
| Exam price | Set per country or region; shown at booking |
| Preparation time | About four weeks with T-SQL experience; see the study plan |
| Validity | 12 months, renewed free online |
| Retake | After 24 hours, 14 days between later attempts |

Questions to ask before you book
- Do I write T-SQL most weeks?
- Does my work need semantic search or model calls from a database?
- Can I practise on SQL Server, Azure SQL or Fabric?
- Is my employer or team going to use this skill?
If the answer to most is yes, start with the exam format, then try the free practice test to see where you stand. Before booking, check the exam changes page for new outline updates.
