DP-750 example study profiles for Databricks

Updated October 9, 2026

Studying for DP-750 well means spending hours where the weights are, then correcting for what your job never touches. Two domains carry 30 to 35% each (preparing data, and deploying and maintaining pipelines) and two carry 15 to 20% each (environment setup, and Unity Catalog security and governance). The exam lasts 120 minutes and needs 700 out of 1000.

Example profiles, not real people. The profiles below are illustrative planning examples built from the official exam outline. They are not reviews or reports of anyone’s result.

The site’s four-week study plan assumes 8 to 10 hours a week and SQL and Python you can already write. That is roughly 32 to 40 hours. A reasonable planning assumption is a split near 20% for each small domain and 30% for each large one, plus a margin for practice questions. Nothing here guarantees a pass.

Profile one: the Data Factory or Synapse engineer who now owns Spark

Starting point. This candidate knows orchestration, linked services, Microsoft Entra and Azure Monitor, which the audience profile assumes. Databricks itself is recent: notebooks yes, Unity Catalog and Lakeflow concepts mostly no.

Where the time goes. Prepare and process data (30 to 35%) for Auto Loader, CDC feeds, merge loads and pipeline expectations, then Unity Catalog object creation in the environment domain.

The trap. Choosing Azure Data Factory for every ingestion question out of habit. The outline lists Lakeflow Connect, notebooks and Azure Data Factory as options, and a scenario with streaming or schema drift favours a different tool.

Suggested order. Week two of the plan (preparing data), then week one (compute and Unity Catalog), then jobs and bundles.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 12 hours on prepare and process, 8 on environment and catalog objects, 8 on pipelines and jobs, and the remainder on security and practice.

Profile two: the notebook-only Databricks developer

Starting point. This candidate writes transformation code daily in notebooks and is comfortable with Delta tables and joins. Jobs run because someone else scheduled them, and permissions were granted by an administrator.

Where the time goes. Deploy and maintain data pipelines (30 to 35%): Lakeflow Jobs, retries, repair runs, Git folders, testing strategy, Declarative Automation Bundles with the CLI, and the monitoring section with Spark UI, query profile and Azure Monitor. Then the 15 to 20% security domain, including row filters, column masks and ABAC.

The trap. Believing code skill carries the exam. The deployment domain asks what to do when a task fails or a bundle target is misconfigured, which a notebook alone never teaches.

Suggested order. Week three first (jobs and deployment), week four (tuning and troubleshooting), then week one security.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 14 hours on deploy and maintain, 8 on Unity Catalog security, 6 on compute choices, and a short revision of data processing.

Profile three: the workspace administrator or consulting engineer

Starting point. This candidate creates workspaces, picks compute, sets permissions and wires Key Vault and service principals for clients, and has built only a few production pipelines.

Where the time goes. The two 30 to 35% domains, which together hold most of the marks. Data modelling choices (table format, partitioning, liquid clustering against Z-ordering, slowly changing dimension type) and the transformation and quality objectives are where this profile has the fewest hours behind it.

The trap. Over-weighting the setup and governance domains because they feel like home ground. At 15 to 20% each they matter, but they are the minority of the outline.

Suggested order. Prepare and process data, then deploy and maintain, then a short review of compute and governance facts.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 16 hours on prepare and process, 12 on deploy and maintain, 4 on setup and security review, and the remainder on practice.

How to check which DP-750 profile fits before booking

Read the prerequisites self-check, then take Microsoft’s practice assessment and sort every wrong answer by domain. The exam format page lists all four weights and the October 19, 2026 outline update. Confirm progress with the free sample questions and the 20-question practice test, then adjust the weeks in the study plan. If your employer runs Fabric rather than Databricks, DP-750 versus DP-700 explains which exam fits.
