DP-750 renewal and retake rules
The Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate earned with DP-750 is valid for one year, and you keep it by passing a free, unproctored, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, which opens six months before the expiry date. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours, then 14 days between later attempts, with a maximum of five in 12 months. Databricks’s own credentials work the opposite way, as the Databricks Data Engineer Associate renewal page shows. Microsoft’s sources are the renewal page, its FAQ and the retake policy.
A worked timeline for a DP-750 holder
Take a hypothetical pass on 10 November 2026. Microsoft’s expiration policy says associate credentials are valid for one year from the date all requirements are completed, so the expiry date is 10 November 2027. The FAQ says the renewal assessment becomes available only six months before expiry, with times in UTC, so the earliest start is around 10 May 2027. A pass extends the credential by one year from the old expiry date, not from the day you passed, so renewing early costs nothing. The expiry date on your Learn profile updates immediately after a pass.
The FAQ recommends not waiting for the last week, to leave room for illness, technical problems or several attempts.
What the renewal assessment is, and is not
| Feature | Microsoft’s statement |
|---|---|
| Cost | Free |
| Where | Online on Microsoft Learn, no Pearson VUE booking |
| Proctoring | None; open book |
| Length | About 45 minutes |
| Content | Focused on recent updates, with free learning modules on the renewal page |
| Attempts | Unlimited; retry at once after a first fail, then at least 24 hours between later tries |
| Language | Same languages as the exam |
Microsoft does not publish the question count or the passing mark for the DP-750 renewal assessment. It also says some items may be drafted with AI and are then reviewed by subject matter experts.
The 19 October 2026 update and renewal
Microsoft says assessment updates are aligned with certification exam updates. The study guide marks the Unity Catalog data modelling and the development lifecycle sub-areas as minor changes as of October 19, 2026, with everything else at the top level unchanged. So someone renewing after that date should expect questions drawn from the updated outline. In particular, check the Declarative Automation Bundles terminology and the clustering topics in the current guide. The changes themselves are summarised on the exam format page.
Microsoft’s FAQ says that if a certification is ever retired, the renewal window may be shortened and reminders suppressed. Nothing in the pages checked says DP-750 is being retired.
When the certification lapses
If a credential expires, Microsoft says you can no longer renew it and must pass the exam again. There is no grace period, and no alternative path: retaking the exam early or passing a beta exam does not renew it. So a lapsed DP-750 holder pays the exam fee again (the price is set per country and shown at booking) and sits the full 120-minute proctored exam. Mark the date on your calendar, since reminder emails only reach people who agreed to communications on their Learn profile.
Retaking the exam itself
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| First fail | Wait 24 hours |
| Second to fifth attempts | 14 days between each |
| Cap | Five attempts within 12 months of the first; after five failures, eligible again 12 months from the first attempt |
| Fee | Each retake is paid (if applicable) |
| Passing again | Not allowed while the certification is current |
| Waiver of the waiting period | Only for internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number |
Because DP-750 is a scenario- and code-heavy exam, the 14-day gap is a useful study window: rework the weakest domain with the study plan, not the same practice paper. Microsoft’s pages checked do not describe a per-domain score breakdown in detail here, so confirm what your score report shows on the score reports page. Accommodations, including extra time, are requested through Microsoft; the study guide also notes 30 extra minutes can be requested if the exam is not in your language.
What differs from other credentials
The same one-year, free-assessment mechanism applies to Microsoft’s other associate, expert and specialty exams, such as DP-700 and AZ-104; fundamentals credentials do not expire. A Databricks vendor credential is the contrast: it expires after two years and renewal means paying for the exam again. A holder of both therefore has two calendars. Details are in the certification costs overview, and the credential’s job relevance is on the career page.
