Is DP-750 worth it? Who should take it
DP-750 is worth taking if you build or run data pipelines on Azure Databricks and want a Microsoft credential that says so. It is not worth taking if your platform is Microsoft Fabric, if you are new to data engineering, or if you only need Databricks credentials from the vendor. The deciding question is whether Azure Databricks is where your work happens.
Who it is for
Microsoft describes the candidate as a data engineer with expertise in integrating and modelling data, building and deploying optimised pipelines, and troubleshooting and maintaining Azure Databricks workloads, with experience in data quality and governance in Unity Catalog. It fits:
- Data engineers on Azure whose organisation runs Databricks.
- Consultants and partners who implement Azure Databricks for clients.
- Platform engineers who set up workspaces, compute and governance.
- Engineers moving from Synapse, Data Factory or open-source Spark to Databricks.
Who should pick something else
| If you… | Consider |
|---|---|
| Work on Microsoft Fabric | DP-700 |
| Want a vendor-run Databricks credential | Databricks Data Engineer Associate |
| Are new to Azure | AZ-900 first |
| Mostly analyse data in SQL and dashboards | Databricks Data Analyst Associate |
The comparison of Databricks and Azure routes lays out the trade-offs between a Microsoft and a Databricks credential.
What it costs
Microsoft sets the price per country or region and shows it at booking, so there is no single figure; see certification costs for how to budget. The certification renews every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the ongoing cost is time. Preparation time is the bigger cost: about four weeks with relevant experience, longer without.
What it proves
- You can choose and configure compute for a workload.
- You can secure and govern data with Unity Catalog privileges, row filters, column masks and Delta Sharing (now OpenSharing).
- You can ingest, model, transform and quality-check data with SQL and Python.
- You can deploy, schedule, monitor and tune pipelines with Lakeflow Jobs, Git and bundles.
What it does not prove
A passing score shows knowledge at the level of the skills outline, not years of production incidents. It does not cover machine learning engineering, advanced streaming design or cost governance at scale. Treat it as evidence that you know the platform, not as a substitute for a portfolio of working pipelines.
Is it still relevant?
The exam tracks current product names and features, and the outline was refreshed for October 19, 2026, which is a sign Microsoft maintains it. Because Databricks changes quickly, expect further revisions; the exam changes page tracks how outlines move. The annual renewal keeps the credential current.
The verdict
Take DP-750 if Azure Databricks is your platform or your clients’ platform. Take DP-700 if it is Fabric. Take the Databricks vendor exam if you want vendor credentials independent of the cloud. When in doubt, start with the exam format and the study plan, and attempt the free practice test to see how close you are.
