Is DP-750 hard? Exam difficulty explained

Updated October 9, 2026

DP-750 is a moderately hard associate exam: harder than a fundamentals exam, comfortable for engineers who run Databricks pipelines in production, and tough for people who have only used notebooks. Microsoft publishes no pass rate, so any figure you see quoted is a guess. The difficulty comes from breadth, from reading code, and from the production topics that learning on a notebook never forces you to meet.

What makes it hard

It is wide

Four domains cover compute, governance, six ingestion routes, modelling, transformation, quality, jobs, Git, bundles, Spark tuning and Azure Monitor. Few people use all of that in one job, so most candidates have blind spots.

The production half is large

Deploying and maintaining pipelines is worth 30–35%. If you have only developed, you may never have set up job triggers, retried a task, repaired a run, deployed a bundle or streamed logs to Log Analytics.

You read code and commands

Expect SQL, PySpark and CLI snippets. A grant missing USE SCHEMA, a streaming query without a checkpoint or a write mode that overwrites can be the whole question.

Several answers look right

Options are usually real features. The right one meets the stated constraint: cost, isolation, latency, history, least privilege. That is a judgement skill that practice builds.

The Azure surface

Entra service principals, managed identities, Key Vault, Data Factory, Event Hubs and Azure Monitor appear alongside Databricks. Engineers from other Spark platforms sometimes underestimate them.

What makes it easier

  • Microsoft publishes the full skills outline, so there are no hidden topics.
  • 120 minutes is a generous time allowance.
  • Question types are standard: multiple choice, ordering and snippets.
  • The scenarios follow the outline, so labs map directly to marks.

How hard for whom

BackgroundExpect
Databricks engineer with production jobs and Unity CatalogModerate; fill gaps in Azure integration and Delta Sharing (OpenSharing)
Spark engineer from another platformModerate to hard; learn Unity Catalog, Lakeflow and bundles
Data engineer on Fabric or SynapseHard; new engine, governance and deployment model
Analyst who writes SQLHard; Python, Git and pipelines are new
Newcomer to data engineeringVery hard; build foundations first

Common reasons people fail

  1. Skipping the smaller domains and losing marks on privileges, masks and Key Vault.
  2. Treating the exam as a Spark exam and ignoring Azure services.
  3. Knowing commands but not when to choose them.
  4. Studying from material for the previous product names.
  5. Never having deployed a bundle or repaired a failed job.

How to make it easier

Follow the study plan, build the labs listed in study resources, and take the practice test under time. Use the exam tips for scenario technique. If the entry level worries you, check the prerequisites first. Compared with DP-700, difficulty is similar in size but different in kind; see DP-750 vs DP-700.
