DP-750 career: Azure Databricks roles
DP-750 leads to the Microsoft Certified: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate credential, and Microsoft files it under exactly one role tag, Data Engineer, with the product tag Azure Databricks and the level Intermediate. The credential is not a ticket to a new job title. It is evidence for people who already build or run pipelines on the Azure flavour of Databricks. The details below come from the certification page and the study guide, and the fee, formats and renewal are covered on renewal and retakes.
The one job Microsoft describes for DP-750
Microsoft does not publish a list of job titles for this credential. It describes a single role in four responsibilities: setting up and configuring an Azure Databricks environment, securing and governing Unity Catalog objects, preparing and processing data, and deploying and maintaining pipelines and workloads. Titles seen in job adverts, such as “Azure data engineer”, “Databricks engineer” or “lakehouse engineer”, are the site’s reading of that description, not Microsoft’s wording.
What is notable is how much of the role is operational. Two of the four responsibilities (setup and governance) are platform work that smaller teams hand to a platform engineer. Someone holding the credential is expected to cover both ends, which suits:
- engineers in a team that runs Databricks as its main lakehouse on Azure and has no separate platform group;
- consultants at implementation partners who set up workspaces, then build the first pipelines;
- engineers coming from Azure Data Factory or Synapse who now own Spark workloads. The audience profile expects familiarity with Data Factory, Microsoft Entra and Azure Monitor, so that background transfers directly.
Who Microsoft says you work with
The study guide closes the audience profile with a list of collaborators: administrators, platform architects, solution architects, data scientists and data analysts. That list is the most useful career signal on the page, because it shows the boundaries of the role.
| You hand work to or receive it from | What the exam makes you handle |
|---|---|
| Administrators | Compute settings, access permissions to compute |
| Platform and solution architects | Catalog, schema and volume layout, naming for isolation and sharing |
| Data scientists | Clean, governed tables; libraries on compute |
| Data analysts | Views, materialized views, row filters and column masks, AI/BI Genie instructions |
Read this as a scope statement. The credential covers the engineering layer in between, not machine learning model work, report design or architecture sign-off.
What a pass does not show
- Production history. A scaled score of 700 shows knowledge at the level of the exam format and the skills outline; it does not show that you have repaired a failed job at 3 a.m.
- Fabric skills. Teams on Microsoft Fabric want DP-700, and DP-750 versus DP-700 explains the split.
- Vendor-neutral Databricks knowledge. Databricks runs its own certifications. The Databricks Data Engineer Associate is a different credential with its own rules, and the Azure versus Databricks comparison sets out the difference.
- A permanent status. The credential expires after a year unless renewed, so it shows currency only while it is active.
Where to go after DP-750
Microsoft’s page lists no successor exam or required next step. The options below are therefore the site’s suggestions based on the skill areas, not an official ladder:
- Add the Fabric side with DP-700 if your organisation runs both Databricks and Fabric. Both are Microsoft data engineering exams, and they renew the same way.
- Add the vendor credential with the Databricks Data Engineer Professional if you want to show deeper Databricks work. The Databricks certification path shows the order of the vendor exams.
- Move toward analytics engineering with DP-600 if modelling for reports becomes your focus.
- Learn Azure basics with AZ-104 if you lack networking and identity depth, since the DP-750 outline assumes Entra and Key Vault knowledge without teaching it.
Checking pay and demand for DP-750 roles
This page quotes no salary or hiring figures, because Microsoft publishes none for this credential. For neutral occupation data, national statistics agencies are the place to start, and local job boards show which of the above titles employers in your region actually use. Whether the credential is worth the study time for you is the question of is DP-750 worth it.
Planning around the October 19, 2026 update
Microsoft says the English version of the certification is updated on October 19, 2026. For a career plan this matters little: the change log marks only two sub-areas as minor changes, and the audience profile is unchanged. If you pass before or after that date, the credential is the same, and the study plan still applies once you check it against the current outline.
