DP-700 study resources
The best DP-700 resources are free: Microsoft’s study guide with the skills outline, the official practice assessment, the Microsoft Fabric documentation, and a Fabric workspace you build things in. Add realistic practice questions to locate your weak domain. Be careful with outdated material, because Fabric changes quickly and the outline is revised, most recently with an update on October 19, 2026.
Start with the official material
- The study guide and skills outline. Microsoft’s DP-700 study guide lists the three domains, each at 30–35%, with every objective and a change log. Read it before anything else and keep it open while you study.
- The certification page. The Fabric Data Engineer Associate page shows the duration, languages, the practice assessment and the renewal information.
- The practice assessment. DP-700 has a free official practice assessment on the certification page. Take it once at the start and once near the end.
- The exam sandbox. The exam sandbox shows the interface and question types without testing content.
- Exam Readiness Zone. Microsoft’s Exam Readiness Zone hosts exam prep videos for several exams; check whether a DP-700 episode is currently listed.
- Microsoft Learn training. The study guide points to self-paced learning paths and instructor-led courses for the exam. Use them for structure, then practise.
Documentation worth reading
The Microsoft Fabric documentation is the primary reference. Start with What is data engineering in Microsoft Fabric?, then read the pages for each item in the outline: lakehouse and table maintenance, data pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks and Spark, Eventstream, Eventhouse and KQL, warehouse security, OneLake security, deployment pipelines and Git integration, and the Monitor hub.
Lab work is the differentiator
DP-700 describes a situation and asks what is missing, broken or best. Six labs cover most of it:
- Secure a workspace. A lakehouse and warehouse, row-level security through a security policy, a masked email column, a OneLake security role on one folder, a sensitivity label and endorsement.
- Ship through stages. Connect a workspace to Git and create a deployment pipeline with a rule that changes a notebook’s default lakehouse per stage.
- Load incrementally. A pipeline with a watermark parameter, a Copy activity that moves only new rows, and a notebook with a parameters cell that does a Delta MERGE.
- Reach external data. A OneLake shortcut to external storage, and a mirrored database if you have a supported source.
- Stream it. An Eventstream into an Eventhouse, a five-minute tumbling aggregation in KQL, the same in Spark structured streaming, and a hopping window.
- Break and tune. Fail a pipeline on purpose and send a Teams alert, run OPTIMIZE and VACUUM on a table with many small files, change a caching policy, and read the Monitor hub for each.
Pause or delete capacity after each session.
What to skip
Skip anything that predates the current outline without checking it. Skip any material that claims to contain real exam questions. Those are against Microsoft’s exam policies, are often wrong, and teach recall instead of the reasoning the exam tests. For guidance on how your own practice should look, see the DP-700 exam tips, and for a plan, the study plan. The general skills outline guide explains how to read an outline.
