DP-700 renewal and retake rules
The Fabric Data Engineer Associate earned with DP-700 expires after one year, and Microsoft’s own page states that role-based and specialty certifications expire unless renewed, at no cost, by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The renewal window opens six months before expiry. A failed DP-700 attempt can be repeated after 24 hours, then after 14 days for later attempts. Timeline of a DP-700 credential
| Moment | What Microsoft says |
|---|---|
| Pass DP-700 | The Fabric Data Engineer Associate is awarded; it is an associate credential, not a fundamentals one. |
| Six months before expiry | The renewal assessment becomes available; it cannot be taken earlier. |
| Within the window | Pass the free, unproctored, open-book assessment; the certification is extended one year from the expiration date. |
| Expiry with no pass | The certification must be earned again by passing the required exam, here DP-700. |
“Extended from the expiration date” means that renewing early does not shorten the year you receive. The FAQ also says the new expiration date shows on your Learn profile immediately after a pass. Microsoft recommends not leaving it to the last week, to allow for technical problems or several attempts.
Renewing is not the same as retaking DP-700
Two points trip candidates up. First, retaking the exam or passing a beta exam does not renew an active certification; the FAQ says the only way is the renewal assessment on Learn, with no exceptions. Second, an unexpired passed exam cannot be taken again: the retake policy says you cannot retake an exam you have passed unless the certification has expired.
The renewal assessment is a different product from the 100-minute proctored exam described in the exam format. Microsoft says it focuses on relevant updates, takes about 45 minutes, and is aligned with exam updates. It is offered in the same languages as the exam.
The October 19, 2026 update and holders
The English DP-700 skills outline changes on October 19, 2026. The study guide change log marks the audience profile and the three domain headings as unchanged, with minor changes to the workspace settings and optimize performance objectives. Microsoft’s pages reviewed for this guide do not say that existing holders must do anything, and the certification itself keeps its name and role. Because the renewal assessments are described as aligned with exam updates, expect the assessment content to track the new outline. Microsoft does not publish the question list, so this guide cannot say which new items appear. Localised exams follow about eight weeks after English, which is also why a non-English sitting soon after the update may reflect the older outline.
If your expiry falls near that date, the practical order is: check the Renew button on your profile, then use the free modules on the renewal page, then take the assessment. The DP-700 exam tips and exam changes page cover how to read an outline change.
Retake rules for the exam itself
- 24 hours after a first failed attempt.
- 14 days between all later attempts, up to five.
- No more than five attempts in 12 months from the first attempt; after five failures you can try again 12 months after the first attempt.
- Each retake is paid for where a fee applies. DP-700 price is shown per country at booking; see certification costs.
- A waiting-period waiver exists only for internet or equipment failure during the exam where a Pearson VUE case was created.
Renewal assessments are different: no limit on attempts, an immediate second try, then at least 24 hours between later attempts.
What Microsoft does not state for DP-700
Microsoft does not publish a DP-700 retirement date, and the pages reviewed show no successor exam. If a certification were retired, the FAQ says the renew-by date may be shortened and reminders suppressed, with alerts shown on Learn. Accommodations such as extra time are available through Microsoft’s request process, and an additional 30 minutes can be requested when the exam is not offered in your language. What this means for a career profile is covered in DP-700 career paths; for the cost of keeping several credentials current, see certification costs.
