DP-700 vs Databricks Data Engineer Associate

Updated October 9, 2026

Take DP-700 if your data work runs on Microsoft Fabric, and the Databricks Data Engineer Associate if it runs on Databricks. The two exams certify the same job on different platforms, and neither is a substitute for the other. DP-700 is broader across a whole analytics platform (workspaces, security, orchestration, streaming and monitoring); the Databricks exam is narrower and goes deeper into Spark, Delta Lake and Lakeflow Jobs.

The Databricks figures come from that exam’s own format page. Only DP-700 publishes a passing score, which gives you a concrete target.

What each exam measures

DP-700 domainWeightDatabricks sectionWeight
Implement and manage an analytics solution30–35%Governance and Security15%
Implementing CI/CD10%
Databricks Intelligence Platform6%
Ingest and transform data30–35%Data Ingestion and Loading21%
Data Transformation and Modeling22%
Working with Lakeflow Jobs16%
Monitor and optimize an analytics solution30–35%Troubleshooting, Monitoring, and Optimization10%

The mapping is loose, not exact. DP-700 puts a third of the exam on monitoring and optimization, while Databricks puts a tenth there. Databricks spends nearly four-tenths on ingestion and transformation, while DP-700 spends about a third on both batch and streaming together with loading patterns.

What carries over

Both exams assume you understand incremental loads, idempotent writes, deduplication, late-arriving data, partitioning and file layout, and the medallion idea of raw, cleaned and curated layers. Both use Delta tables underneath: a Fabric lakehouse stores tables in Delta format in OneLake, so Delta features such as MERGE, time travel and table maintenance transfer almost directly. PySpark and SQL skills transfer too.

What does not carry over

TopicDP-700Databricks
OrchestrationPipelines, notebooks, Dataflows Gen2, schedules and event triggersLakeflow Jobs
GovernanceWorkspace roles, item permissions, OneLake security, sensitivity labels, Purview auditUnity Catalog style governance
StreamingEventstream, Spark structured streaming, KQL in EventhouseStructured streaming and Auto Loader
Language mixSQL, PySpark and KQLSQL and Python/PySpark
DeploymentGit integration, deployment pipelines, database projectsCI/CD section: version control and deployment automation

KQL is the clearest gap. If you come from Databricks you have probably never written a Kusto query, and DP-700 tests it for streaming transformations and Eventhouse troubleshooting. If you come from Fabric, expect to learn Auto Loader and Lakeflow concepts from scratch.

Which one to pick

  • Your employer uses Fabric or Power BI heavily: DP-700. The credential names the platform your team runs.
  • Your employer uses Databricks, including on Azure: the Databricks exam. For Databricks on Azure, Microsoft also has DP-750, covering data engineering on Azure Databricks.
  • You build semantic models and reports on Fabric rather than pipelines: look at DP-600 instead.
  • You are choosing a platform from scratch: certify the one your next job or project will use. The broader trade-off is in Databricks vs Azure data engineering.

Doing both

Common for consultants. The conceptual overlap makes the second exam faster, but not trivial: expect two to three extra weeks to learn the platform-specific surface. Studying Spark and Delta first makes the Fabric notebook content easier; studying Fabric first gives you the governance and monitoring vocabulary that Databricks tests at a lighter level.

Difficulty

Neither is easy. DP-700 is wide, with three equally weighted domains and three query languages. The Databricks associate is narrower but expects precise knowledge of its syntax and features. For DP-700 specifically, see is DP-700 hard?, and for the Databricks side the exam overview.
