DP-700 exam tips: how to pass first time
The most useful DP-700 tip is to treat almost every question as a tool-choice problem: find the one requirement in the scenario that rules out the obvious option. The exam is built on decisions such as pipeline versus notebook, lakehouse versus warehouse, Eventstream versus Spark streaming, schedule versus event trigger. Knowing each feature in isolation is not enough; you must know what separates it from its neighbour.
Underline the deciding word
Scenarios hide the answer in a phrase. Typical deciding words:
| Phrase in the scenario | Points toward |
|---|---|
| No code, business analyst | Dataflow Gen2 |
| Complex logic, large scale, custom libraries | Notebook |
| Orchestrate several steps, retries, notifications | Pipeline |
| Sub-second, time-series, logs | Eventhouse and KQL |
| Without copying the data | OneLake shortcut |
| Keep an operational database in sync | Mirroring |
| Only changed rows | Incremental load with a watermark |
| One folder in a lakehouse | OneLake security |
| Hide values but keep rows | Dynamic data masking |
| Filter rows per user | Row-level security |
Layered security
Think in layers: workspace role, item permission, data-level control. If a user has a workspace role that already exposes everything, no data-level control can narrow it for that user. Many wrong answers add a control at the wrong layer.
Code questions
You will see snippets with a gap. Practise reading these quickly:
- KQL:
where, project, summarize ... by bin(Timestamp, 5m),join,extend, and management commands that start with a dot. - PySpark:
groupBy().agg(), window functions withrow_number(),withWatermark,readStreamandwriteStream, Deltamerge. - T-SQL:
CREATE SECURITY POLICY,MASKED WITH,GRANTandDENY,CREATE STATISTICS.
Optimization is mostly vocabulary
Questions pair a symptom with a cure. Many small files means OPTIMIZE. Old files taking storage means VACUUM. A large shuffle on a small lookup means broadcast. Old data slowing Eventhouse queries means caching and retention policy. A slow Copy from a large table means partition options and parallelism. Learn these pairs until they are automatic.
Time and case studies
You have 100 minutes. Do the standalone questions first at a steady pace and leave a reserve for case studies, where one scenario feeds several questions. If a series of yes/no statements cannot be revisited, read each carefully before answering. Do not spend more than a couple of minutes on one item.
Common traps
- Confusing OPTIMIZE (compact) with VACUUM (delete unreferenced files).
- Choosing Spark streaming when the scenario wants low-code or KQL, and the reverse.
- Forgetting that a shortcut reads data in place and a copy duplicates it.
- Using a schedule when the requirement says data arrives irregularly.
- Treating dynamic data masking as security that blocks access; it only changes what is returned.
- Overlooking that Certified endorsement needs authorised reviewers.
Before the exam
Take the free Microsoft practice assessment, use the sandbox to see the interface, and rehearse the practice test. For logistics and rules on the day, see the exam day guide. If your last practice scores in one domain stay below 80%, spend the final days there rather than re-reading strong areas.
