DP-600 renewal and retake rules (2026)
The Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate earned through DP-600 is valid for 12 months and is renewed for free by passing an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, not by retaking the exam. If you fail DP-600 itself you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later ones. The English exam and its skills outline change on October 19, 2026, and Microsoft states that renewal assessments follow exam updates. This page is based on Microsoft Learn pages loaded on 2026-10-09; see also DP-600 career paths.
The 12-month clock
Microsoft’s credential expiration policy says role-based (associate and expert) certifications are valid for one year from the date you complete all requirements. The DP-600 certification page shows the same figure as “Renewal Frequency: 12 months”. Because this credential needs only one exam, the clock starts the day you pass DP-600.
The credential is not a fundamentals one. Fundamentals certifications do not expire, which is the key difference from, say, a Microsoft fundamentals exam taken in the same account.
Renewing without sitting DP-600 again
The renewal page and FAQ give these rules:
- Eligibility opens six months before expiry. You cannot renew earlier than that, and times are in UTC.
- Open your Learn profile, go to Certifications and look for the Renew button. Emails go out when you become eligible if your profile has an address and you accepted communications.
- The assessment is free, online, unproctored and open book. The FAQ says it takes about 45 minutes and focuses on recent updates.
- Pass it and the new expiry date is set immediately on your profile, one year after the previous expiry date. Renewing early therefore does not cost you months.
There is no attempt limit. After a failed first try you can try again at once; after the second try you wait at least 24 hours between attempts. The FAQ says there is no other route: a beta exam or retaking DP-600 before expiry does not renew the credential, “no exceptions”.
What the October 19, 2026 change means for holders
The English DP-600 exam is updated on October 19, 2026 (see the update explained). Holders often ask whether they must retake the exam. Microsoft’s pages say no such thing: nothing on the certification page, study guide or renewal FAQ requires a current holder to sit the new exam. What the FAQ does say is that renewal assessments are aligned with exam updates, so the questions you meet in your next renewal should reflect the newer content, such as Direct Lake choices and file-level access control. Microsoft does not publish the exact date a given renewal assessment is switched, so treat the timing as unconfirmed.
Localised exams lag: Microsoft says other languages are updated roughly eight weeks after English, with possible delays. DP-600 is offered in English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), German, French, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil).
If your DP-600 credential expires
The expiration policy is blunt: once it expires you can no longer renew it and must re-earn it by passing the required exam. For DP-600 that means a full proctored attempt on whichever outline is current. The retake policy allows this, since you may not retake a passed exam unless the certification has expired. Set a reminder for the opening of the six-month window instead of the final week; the FAQ itself recommends renewing well before expiration in case of technical problems.
If Microsoft ever retires this certification, the FAQ says “renew by” messages take the retirement date into account, and the renewal window may be shortened for some holders. Nothing on the DP-600 pages announces a retirement.
DP-600 retake rules for failed attempts
From Microsoft’s retake policy:
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| After the first failure | Wait 24 hours |
| Between all later attempts | 14-day wait, up to 5 attempts |
| Limit | No more than 5 attempts in 12 months from the first attempt; after five failures, eligible again 12 months after the first attempt |
| Fee | You pay again for each retake where a fee applies |
| Waiting-period waiver | Only for internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number |
Exam fees vary by country, so check the booking page; the certification costs guide covers the wider picture. If your language is not offered, the study guide says you can request an extra 30 minutes. For accommodations, Microsoft points to its accommodations page. Score reports follow the standard rule that 700 or more passes; the process on the day is in the exam day guide, and the exam mechanics are on the exam format page.
Which rules are shared with other Microsoft exams
The 12-month validity, six-month window, free assessment and retake waits are the same for PL-300, DP-700 and other Microsoft associate exams. What is specific to DP-600 is the content that the renewal assessment draws on (Fabric lakehouse, warehouse and semantic-model topics) and the timing of the October 2026 outline.
