Is DP-600 hard? Difficulty explained

Updated October 9, 2026

DP-600 is a moderately hard, associate-level exam. It is harder than a fundamentals exam because it combines three languages (SQL, KQL and DAX) with design decisions, and it is easier than expert-level exams because the scope is one platform. Microsoft rates it intermediate. People who already build models in Power BI or write T-SQL for a living tend to find it manageable; people new to Fabric find the breadth the main obstacle.

What makes it demanding

FactorWhy it is hard
BreadthGovernance, lifecycle, ingestion, transformation, querying and modelling in one exam
Three query languagesReading and completing SQL, KQL and DAX snippets
Judgement questionsSeveral answers work; you pick the one that fits the constraint
Fast-moving productFabric features change, and preview features may appear
Weight on Prepare data45–50% of the exam rests on hands-on transformation and store choice
Outline updateThe English exam changes on October 19, 2026, so older material may mislead

What is not hard

  • There is no coding exam: you read and complete snippets rather than write programs.
  • The topics are documented and free to practise on a trial capacity.
  • Microsoft publishes a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox.
  • No other certification is required first.

Who finds it easier

BackgroundLikely difficulty
Power BI developer with enterprise modelsEasier on semantic models; add lakehouse, KQL and governance
T-SQL data warehouse developerEasier on Prepare data; add DAX, Direct Lake and deployment
Data engineer with SparkEasier on ingestion; add DAX and the semantic model domain
Business analyst new to FabricHardest; allow extra weeks

The parts that trip people up

  1. Choosing between stores and fallbacks. Questions give you three reasonable items and a single constraint.
  2. DAX evaluation. Knowing what filter context applies is more important than memorising functions.
  3. Governance details. Which security feature works at which level, and what endorsement does and does not do.
  4. Lifecycle tools. Deployment rules, the XMLA endpoint and .pbip projects are easy to skip in daily work.
  5. Direct Lake behaviour. Fallback, framing, and the two flavours.

How much study time

Microsoft does not publish a study-hour figure. A typical split for someone with SQL and Power BI experience is about four weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week (see the study plan); someone new to the platform should plan more. Hands-on time matters more than reading.

Judging your readiness

Take the official practice assessment cold, then the free practice test. If you score 80% or more consistently on different sets, and your weakest domain is within ten points of your best, you are close. If you fall under 70% on Prepare data, extend your preparation, because it carries the most weight.

Is the passing score hard?

The pass mark is 700 on a scaled range of 1 to 1000. That is not a 70% raw score, and Microsoft does not publish the conversion, so do not plan around a percentage. Plan around mastery of the weighted domains instead. Learn more in exam format and exam tips.
