DP-600 vs DP-700: analytics or data engineer?

Updated October 9, 2026

Take DP-600 if your work is modelling, securing and serving data for analysis, with SQL, DAX and semantic models. Take DP-700 if your work is ingesting, transforming and orchestrating data with pipelines, notebooks and PySpark. Both are associate-level Microsoft Fabric exams of 100 minutes with no prerequisite between them, so you choose by role, not by order.

The two certifications side by side

Both certifications share the 12-month renewal on Microsoft Learn. The shared word is KQL: both exams expect you to query real-time data. The difference is the second and third language. DP-600 adds DAX, the language of semantic models. DP-700 adds PySpark, the language of notebook-based transformation.

What each role does

Microsoft describes the analytics engineer as responsible for three things: preparing and enriching data for analysis, securing and maintaining analytics assets, and implementing and managing semantic models. You work with stakeholders on business requirements and with architects, analysts, engineers and administrators.

Microsoft describes the data engineer as responsible for ingesting and transforming data, securing and managing an analytics solution, and monitoring and optimising it. You work with analytics engineers, architects, analysts and administrators.

In practice the hand-off looks like this. The data engineer builds pipelines that land and clean data in a lakehouse, often in the bronze, silver and gold style. The analytics engineer takes the curated tables, shapes them into a star schema, builds a semantic model with measures and security, and deploys it through a pipeline so that reports are fast and consistent.

Where the exams overlap

Both exams assume you can work in the same Fabric workspace. Expect shared ground in these areas:

  • Choosing between lakehouse, warehouse and eventhouse.
  • Workspace and item security, and sensitivity labels.
  • Source control and deployment of Fabric items.
  • Querying with SQL and KQL.

If you already hold one, the other is mostly a change of emphasis. A data engineer needs to add star-schema modelling, DAX and Direct Lake. An analytics engineer needs to add Spark, pipelines and orchestration.

Which one first?

Your backgroundStart with
Power BI developer, report author, BI analystDP-600 (after or alongside PL-300 if you are new to Power BI)
SQL developer who builds data modelsDP-600
ETL or Spark developer, data platform engineerDP-700
Moving from Synapse or Data FactoryDP-700

If you are new to Power BI, PL-300 teaches the report-facing side: Power Query, basic modelling and visuals. DP-600 assumes you already know that and goes into enterprise scale: Direct Lake, composite models, deployment pipelines and governance. Many people take PL-300, then DP-600.

Should you take both?

If you work end to end on Fabric projects, yes, and the order matters little. Ask what your next project needs. For each exam read the official skills outline and compare it against what you did last quarter. The skills outline guide explains how to read an outline objective by objective.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing DP-600 because you like dashboards. Report design is not what it tests; modelling and governance are.
  • Choosing DP-700 because Spark sounds more advanced. Neither exam is a step above the other.
  • Skipping T-SQL. Both exams use it heavily.
