Databricks ML Associate renewal rules

Updated October 9, 2026

The Databricks Certified Machine Learning Associate is valid for two years from the award date. To recertify you take “the current version of the exam”, and if you fail you may retake after 14 days, paying the full $200 each time. The rules come from the exam page and the certification FAQ, and they match the other Databricks exams, so this page concentrates on what is particular to the ML Associate.

Reading the two-year clock for this exam

The FAQ says a certification is valid for two years from the date it is awarded and that the digital badge expires two years after it was awarded. It also says holders are notified in advance of expiry. Databricks publishes no renewal window, no grace period and no early-renewal discount, so a lapsed holder simply sits the exam again.

Databricks does not say whether a new pass before expiry restarts the clock from the new award date or extends the old one. Anyone with a contractual or employer deadline should ask Databricks support rather than assume.

What “the current version” means for ML content

The exam page links an exam guide dated March 2025 in its file name, and the page itself says there will only ever be one version of each exam, with the guide as the source of truth. For the ML Associate that has a practical effect: a person recertifying in 2027 faces whatever the guide says then, not the paper they passed. The same MLflow and Unity Catalog topics will probably remain, but the page describes the exam as covering “select features of MLflow”, a phrase that signals the scope can shift as the platform changes. Read the guide again before booking; the study plan can be reused as a refresh.

Retake rules at a glance

QuestionDatabricks position
Attempt limitNone; retake as many times as you like
Wait between attempts14 days
FeeSame as the original, $200; payment each time
Free retake vouchersThe FAQ says none are issued
Using another name or email to avoid the waitProhibited; can mean denied or revoked certification

Because the first attempt costs $200 and every repeat costs the same, a failed ML Associate paper means one resit doubles the spend to $400. The 14 days are better used on the weakest section, which for most candidates is the 38% platform area described in the explainer.

Scores, results and rescheduling

  • Passing score. Databricks says passing scores are set by statistical analysis, may change as questions are updated, and are not published. That is why the exam format page gives no number.
  • Results. Unofficial results appear at the end. For a pass, Databricks reviews the proctor recording before posting the badge to credentials.databricks.com.
  • Rescheduling. The FAQ requires more than 24 hours’ notice for an online exam and more than 72 hours for a test centre. The terms and conditions mention 72 hours without that split, so the stricter figure is the safe one.
  • Accommodations. The terms put the responsibility on the candidate to request them through the test sponsor before scheduling, and say some, such as a translator, may carry an extra fee.
  • Deprecation precedent. The FAQ records that the Professional Data Scientist and Azure Databricks Associate Platform exams were deprecated on 22 August 2022 because their content was outdated, and that issued Professional Data Scientist certifications stayed valid for the standard period. No such notice exists for the ML Associate on the pages checked.

Does a higher exam refresh this one

Databricks does not state that passing the Machine Learning Professional renews the Associate. Its page carries the same two-year validity and the same instruction to take the current exam. Treat each credential as having its own date.

The practical conclusion for someone planning a career is to budget $200 every two years per credential held. Certification costs shows how that compounds, and the career page explains where the credential leads while it is current. For booking logistics read exam day.
