Databricks GenAI Engineer renewal and retakes

Updated October 9, 2026

The Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate is valid for two years from the date it is awarded, and the only renewal route is to take the current version of the exam again. A failed attempt can be retaken after 14 days, any number of times, at the original $200 fee each time. The exam page and the certification FAQ state these rules, and they are the same for every Databricks exam.

Why two years is a harder deal for this exam

The two-year period is identical across Databricks, but its effect differs by subject. Generative AI tooling changes faster than most. On the exam page, the component that other material calls Vector Search appears as “AI Search”, and the page lists Model Serving, MLflow and Unity Catalog beside it. The linked exam guide carries a March 2026 date in its address. A candidate who prepared from 2024 notes would meet different names and possibly different emphasis.

So the practical cost of renewal is not the fee but the re-learning. The recertification exam is the live paper, not a diff of what changed. Databricks says there will only ever be one version of each exam, and that the current exam guide is “the source of truth” for what is tested.

Badge dates and what Databricks promises for the GenAI badge

The FAQ does not say whether passing before expiry restarts the clock from the new award date or extends the old one. If a contract or job requirement depends on exact dates, ask Databricks support rather than assuming.

The 14-day Kryterion retake rule for GenAI Engineer

  1. Wait 14 days after the failed take.
  2. Re-register and pay the same price as the original exam.
  3. Repeat as often as needed. There is no stated cap on attempts.

The FAQ is explicit that Databricks “will not issue free retake vouchers for any exam”. Vouchers in general can be entered at checkout, but retake vouchers are excluded. A budget for two attempts is $400, and it is worth reading how to study before booking a second.

Databricks does not publish the passing score, saying scores are set through statistical analysis and may change as questions are updated. A failed attempt therefore gives no stated margin to aim at. Unofficial results appear at the end of the exam, and for a pass Databricks reviews the proctor recording before the badge is posted.

Kryterion booking points that matter on retake day

  • Rescheduling. Online proctored exams must be rescheduled more than 24 hours ahead. Test-centre exams need more than 72 hours. Missing those windows incurs a rescheduling fee. Delivery is through Kryterion, and the exam day page covers the online checks.
  • Test aids and language. None are allowed. All machine learning code in the exam is Python, and non-ML data manipulation code could appear in SQL.
  • Unscored items. The paper may contain more than the 45 scored questions. Extra time is factored in, so a longer paper is not a sign of a problem.
  • Accommodations and appeals. The FAQ pages checked do not describe either. Contact the exam provider through your account if you need one.

Living with a two-year GenAI badge

Treat the credential as a dated snapshot. Put the badge year next to it on a profile, and plan the next sitting around product changes: Databricks says the exam guide is the authority, so reread it before booking. Holding the Machine Learning Associate or the Data Engineer Associate as well does not renew this one. Databricks does not state that any exam refreshes another, so each badge keeps its own date.

Databricks has retired exams before. The FAQ lists the Professional Data Scientist and Azure Databricks Associate Platform exams as deprecated on 22 August 2022 because their content was outdated, and says existing holders keep the standard validity period. Nothing published suggests that for this exam, but the precedent shows how a fast-moving subject can end. The exam changes page tracks such events.
