Databricks Data Engineer Pro renewal rules
The Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional is valid for two years, and the only renewal route is sitting “the current version of the exam” again at the $200 registration fee. After a failed attempt you wait 14 days, and no attempt is free. The exam page states the validity and recertification lines, and the certification FAQ supplies the retake and rescheduling rules.

Everything in that table is identical for the other Databricks exams, including the Associate. This exam differs only in its content, which is the part that decides what a recertification attempt looks like.
Recertifying at Professional level in practice
From 9 October 2026 the Professional paper has 60 scored questions in 120 minutes across nine sections; until 8 October it had 59 across ten. A recertifier sits the paper live on the exam date, not the one they passed, and the exam guide says recertification means taking “the current live exam”. The FAQ says there will only ever be one version of each exam and that the exam guide is the source of truth. The October 2026 changeover shows what that means in practice: anyone who certified on the ten-section outline recertifies on the nine-section one. The current description on the exam page names Apache Spark Declarative Pipelines, Lakeflow Jobs, serverless compute and Asset Bundles. Someone who certified two years ago on an older product vocabulary should read the current guide before assuming their knowledge carries over.
Practical consequences:
- Plan the sitting before the expiry date. The FAQ promises a notice but gives no renewal window and no grace period. It does not say whether passing early restarts the two-year clock from the new award date. Databricks support is the place to ask when a contract depends on it.
- Budget the whole fee. No discounted recertification price is published on the pages used here.
- Do not count on the Associate. Databricks does not state that holding or renewing one data engineer credential refreshes the other. Each carries its own award date, so track both. Whether a Professional pass can substitute for an expired Associate is likewise not published.
- Keep your preparation material current. The study plan and cheat sheet on this site are meant for the current guide; compare them with the official guide before relying on them.
Retakes after a failed attempt
Two weeks is a short gap for a nine-section exam where three sections are worth 8% or less. A sensible use of the wait is to rebuild the sections where the result showed weakness rather than rebooking at once, because each attempt costs $200 and Databricks will not issue retake vouchers.
The FAQ does not say how much detail a failed attempt’s result gives, only that unofficial results appear at the end of the exam. For passes, Databricks reviews the proctor recording before it posts the badge to credentials.databricks.com and sends an Accredible email. The FAQ adds that Databricks does not share information about failed attempts with your organisation, but reserves the right to tell it which certifications you earned.
Rescheduling: online and test centre differ
The FAQ distinguishes the two delivery methods. An online proctored exam must be rescheduled more than 24 hours before the slot; a test centre exam, more than 72 hours before. Missing the deadline “will result in a rescheduling fee”. The Professional is offered both ways, so the deadline depends on which you chose. The new version is offered in English only, where the old one also had Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil) and Korean. Registration runs through Kryterion’s Webassessor, and the FAQ points to Kryterion pages for system checks and for behaviour that gets an online exam suspended. A work laptop with firewalls is flagged as a common cause. The exam day page lists the checks worth doing.
What Databricks does not publish for the Professional
- Any renewal window or grace period after expiry.
- Whether an early pass restarts the two-year period.
- Accommodation rules for this exam; the FAQ pages used here do not cover them, so ask through your account or certification support.
- The passing score.
If a rule here matters for a deadline, confirm it on the Databricks pages, since the company can change its program. The exam changes page tracks vendor shifts, and the career page covers what the credential does and does not show while it is valid.
