Data Engineer Professional prerequisites
The Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional has no formal prerequisites: you do not need the Associate exam first. Databricks’ exam page lists the prerequisites as “None, but related training highly recommended” and the recommended experience as “hands-on experience performing the data engineering tasks outlined in the exam guide”. No number of months or years is published. In practice the Professional exam goes much deeper than the Associate, so this page lays out what to have in place before you start the study plan.
What Databricks says
- Prerequisites: none, with related training highly recommended.
- Recommended experience: hands-on experience with the data engineering tasks in the exam guide; no duration given.
- Preparation: take the related training outlined in the exam guide.
Nothing is checked at booking. Note that the outline changed on 9 October 2026, so the exam guide you read should be the current one; the exam format page describes the change.
The background that actually helps
Everything the Associate covers
Even without taking it, you should be able to do what the Associate tests: ingest data, transform it with SQL and Python, run scheduled jobs and apply Unity Catalog permissions. The Professional assumes these are second nature. See professional vs associate for the jump in depth.
Python you can read at pace
The biggest section, developing code, is 23% and is read-heavy. Expect to interpret PySpark and Structured Streaming code, including state, watermarks and checkpoints, and decide which snippet is correct.
Incremental and streaming pipelines
You should have run change data capture or incremental loads and understand why they fail. Slowly changing dimensions, merges and idempotent reprocessing come up repeatedly.
Performance and cost thinking
Optimisation is 15%. Having investigated a slow job, looked at data layout, file sizes and clustering choices, and weighed compute cost helps far more than memorising feature names. The optimisation page is the companion.
Deployment and monitoring habits
Version control, environment promotion, and alerting on failed or late jobs are part of the exam. Experience deploying a pipeline beyond a notebook is valuable.
What you do not need
| Not needed | Why |
|---|---|
| The Associate certification | Not required by Databricks |
| A fixed number of years | None is published |
| Scala | The exam centres on Python and SQL |
| Cloud-provider certification | Outside the exam guide |
| Machine learning skills | A different certification track |
A short self-check
- Have you debugged a streaming job that stalled or reprocessed data?
- Can you explain when to cluster a table rather than partition it?
- Have you deployed a pipeline through more than one environment?
- Can you read unfamiliar PySpark and find the bug?
If you answer no to most, either get that hands-on time first or use the longer path in the study plan. Associate holders can follow its compressed route.
If you are short on experience
No duration is published, so judge yourself by the work done rather than the calendar. If production-style experience is missing, recreate it: take a pipeline you built, make it incremental, add expectations and alerts, and deploy it through two environments. Then deliberately break it and fix it. That troubleshooting habit is what the scenario questions reward.
Where it leads
Continue with the study plan, check how hard the exam is, and see the exam format for weights.
