Is the Databricks Data Analyst Associate worth it?
The Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate is worth it if you work in Databricks SQL and want a credential that matches what analysts actually do. At $200 for 90 minutes it is reasonably priced, and the syllabus covers the full analyst loop — query, check, visualise, share — plus the newer Genie spaces that most analysts have not yet touched.
Its value is tied to the platform. Outside a Databricks environment it signals little.
Who gets the most out of it
Analysts already using Databricks SQL. The obvious audience. Much of it you do daily; the exam validates it and fills the gaps, particularly around warehouse cost and Genie.
BI developers moving onto Databricks. If you know dashboards elsewhere, this maps that skill onto Databricks vocabulary and adds the platform layer.
Analysts whose organisation has just adopted Databricks. The syllabus is a reasonable onboarding curriculum regardless of whether anyone sits the exam.
Anyone who will be asked to set up Genie spaces. 12% of this exam covers a capability few people have used, and it is becoming a common ask as organisations try to give business users self-service.
Who should skip it

- Anyone not on Databricks. SQL transfers; the platform content does not.
- Analysts who only consume dashboards. This assumes you build them.
- Anyone needing a vendor-neutral analytics credential. This is not that.

The English-only constraint is worth weighing if that is not your first language, because Databricks’ other certifications are offered in four languages and this one is not.
The honest case against
Platform-specific. Your SQL transfers anywhere. Warehouses, Genie and Unity Catalog do not.
Two-year validity, with recertification on the current version.
Associate level. It says you can use Databricks SQL competently. It does not say you can design an analytics platform.
Recognition is ecosystem-bound. Meaningful inside Databricks shops, limited outside — though for analysts, who tend to stay within a company’s stack for longer, this matters less than it does for engineers.
Genie may change. It is the newest content on the exam and the most likely to shift before your two years are up.
The verdict
A sensible credential for an analyst working in Databricks SQL today. Five weeks, $200, and a syllabus covering the parts of the job analysts typically learn by accident — warehouse cost, query profiling, and the difference between a view and a materialised view.
The most genuinely useful section is arguably Genie spaces, precisely because it is unfamiliar. Learning to curate one properly — the tables, the instructions, the maintenance — is a skill organisations are about to need and few analysts currently have.
