Databricks Data Analyst Associate careers
The Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate points at one job family: people who query, chart and explain data inside Databricks SQL. Databricks files it under a “Data Analyst” role on its certification page but publishes no audience profile or list of job titles, so every title below is interpretation. What the page does state is narrow and useful: no prerequisites, 6+ months of hands-on analysis experience recommended, 45 multiple-choice questions, and a recertification requirement every two years.
What “Data Analyst” means on this credential
The vendor wording describes proficiency with the Databricks Data + AI Platform across Unity Catalog, SQL querying, dashboards, AI/BI Genie spaces and data security. Read that as a tool-proficiency badge, not a job-title badge. The format page shows where the weight sits: executing queries on SQL warehouses is 20%, dashboards 16%, analysing queries 15% and Genie spaces 12%.
Two things set it apart from the other Databricks associates. It is offered in English only, and it is the only one that tests Genie curation. A hiring manager who knows the platform will read the badge as “can work in Databricks SQL without hand-holding”, nothing more.
Titles the syllabus plausibly serves
| Plausible title | What in the exam matches | What the job usually adds |
|---|---|---|
| SQL or data analyst on a lakehouse | Querying, query profiling, views vs materialised views | Stakeholder questions, metric definitions |
| BI developer or dashboard author | Dashboards and visualisations, sharing and scheduling | Design judgement, source-system knowledge |
| Analytics or reporting specialist in a Databricks shop | Warehouse sizing and cost, Unity Catalog permissions | Business domain depth |
| Self-service enablement or data product owner | Setting up and maintaining Genie spaces | Change management, documentation |
| Business user promoted into analysis | The whole loop from query to shared result | Usually a few months of SQL practice first |
None of these titles is assigned by Databricks. Employers define them, and the same title can mean spreadsheet work at one company and warehouse tuning at another. For pay and demand, use an official labour-statistics source for your own country and quote nothing from a certification-prep site, including this one.
What passing Data Analyst does not prove
- Pipeline skill. Importing data and data modelling are 5% each. Building and scheduling ingestion is the territory of the Data Engineer Associate; the comparison page sets out the split.
- Statistics or modelling. Nothing here covers hypothesis tests, forecasting or training models.
- Genie that works in practice. The exam checks that you know how a space is built and maintained. Whether business users trust its answers depends on curation over months.
- Currency. The badge expires two years after award, and Databricks says there will only ever be one version of each exam. See renewal and retake rules.
From Data Analyst Associate to engineering, ML or Power BI
| If your work is heading toward | Next credential | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Building the tables you query | Data Engineer Associate | Ingestion, transformation, jobs |
| Heavy DataFrame code in Python | Spark Developer Associate | Code-heavy, different emphasis |
| Predictive models on the same data | Machine Learning Associate | Adjacent track, shared platform |
| Reporting in the Microsoft stack | PL-300 | Power BI analyst credential, for teams that report outside Databricks |
| Databricks inside Azure engineering teams | DP-750 | Microsoft credential for Databricks on Azure |
Moving up to the Data Engineer Professional normally goes through engineering experience, not through this exam. The wider ladder is on the Databricks certification path.
Putting the badge to work
Databricks issues a digital badge on pass, after it reviews the proctor recording. Pair it with something a reader can open: a dashboard built on a public dataset, a short write-up of how a query was tuned after reading its profile, or a documented Genie space with its instructions and sample questions. These show the 51% of the exam that is the analyst loop better than the badge alone.
Weigh the cost over time before committing: the $200 fee repeats at every recertification, as the certification costs page explains across vendors. Whether the exam is worth it for your situation is covered in is it worth it.
Python, Databricks lock-in and timing for analysts
Do I need Python? Databricks lists no prerequisite and the exam is SQL-centred; check the exam guide for any code in the questions.
Is it only for people already using Databricks? Mostly. SQL transfers to other platforms; warehouses, Unity Catalog and Genie do not.
How soon can I sit it? The study plan assumes about five weeks.
