CS0-004 prerequisites: what you need first

Updated October 30, 2026

CompTIA CySA+ CS0-004 has no formal prerequisites. CompTIA’s V4 page recommends about four years in a SOC analyst or vulnerability analyst role, and nothing is checked at booking. The page lists no recommended certification, so the sensible question is whether you have the underlying skills. This page lists them so you can decide before starting the study plan.

What CompTIA says

The only recommendation on the official CS0-004 page is “about 4 years in a SOC analyst or vulnerability analyst role”. Earlier V3 material and CompTIA’s progression advice mentioned Network+ and Security+ or equivalent knowledge. The V4 page does not list a certification, so read those as a sensible path and not an official requirement. The CS0-004 vs CS0-003 page compares the versions.

The background that helps

Security fundamentals

CySA+ builds on ideas such as the CIA triad, authentication, encryption, malware types and common attacks. You will not be taught what phishing or privilege escalation is. A Security+ level knowledge (SY0-801) covers this.

Networking

Reading logs and packet captures needs ports, protocols, DNS, firewalls and the idea of normal traffic. This is where Network+ knowledge helps, and the security operations guide relies on it.

Operating systems and logs

Know where Windows and Linux record events, what a process and a service are, and how a user logs in. Alerts mean little unless you recognise normal behaviour.

Tool familiarity

The exam refers to SIEM, EDR, vulnerability scanners and similar tools. You rarely need product-specific knowledge, but you should know what each tool type produces and what you do with its output. A free lab such as a local SIEM or a scanner against your own test machine is the best preparation.

Reading and light scripting

You may be asked to interpret log lines, scan results or short commands and scripts. You do not need to write programs.

Writing clearly

Reporting and communication is its own domain, so a habit of summarising findings for non-technical readers helps.

What you do not need

You do not needWhy
Four years in a SOCA recommendation; labs and logs can partly substitute
A specific certificationNone listed on the V4 page
Coding abilityInterpretation, not development
Specific toolsQuestions describe the tool type
A degreeNot mentioned officially

A short self-check

  1. What is the difference between a vulnerability, a threat and a risk?
  2. What would you expect to find in a web server log?
  3. What does an EDR tool do?
  4. Name the main stages of incident response.
  5. Why is a CVSS score not the same as business risk?

If these feel comfortable, start. If several are new, build security and networking basics first. Is CS0-004 hard? explains why.

Where it leads
