AZ-900 study resources

The best AZ-900 resources are free: Microsoft’s skills outline and study guide, the Microsoft Learn training for the exam, the free official practice assessment, and a free Azure account to look around in. Add realistic practice questions to find your weakest domain. The main thing to be careful with is age: Azure renames services often, and older material uses names the current exam no longer does.

Start with the official material

The study guide and skills outline. Three domains — cloud concepts (25–30%), architecture and services (35–40%), management and governance (30–35%) — with every sub-objective listed. It was last revised on July 20, 2026. Read it before anything else and keep it open while you study; it is the only authoritative list of what can be tested.

Microsoft Learn training. The certification page links self-paced learning paths and an instructor-led course for AZ-900. The self-paced paths are free and follow the outline closely. They are the most efficient single resource for this exam.

The free practice assessment. Microsoft publishes one for AZ-900 on the certification page. It shows the style, wording and difficulty of real questions. Take it once early to see where you stand and again at the end.

The exam sandbox. Ten minutes in Microsoft’s demo shows the interface and question types. No content, but no surprises on the day either.

Exam Readiness Zone. Microsoft’s study guide links this video series among its resources. Short sessions that walk through exam objectives are a useful change from reading.

A free Azure account

You can pass AZ-900 without an Azure subscription, but a free account makes the names concrete. You do not need to deploy anything. Useful things to do:

1. Open the create screens for a virtual machine, a storage account and a virtual network, and read every field. Most of the architecture objectives appear somewhere on those screens.
2. Look at the resource hierarchy: find your subscription, create a resource group, and see where management groups sit.
3. Price something in the pricing calculator. Compare the same VM in two regions and with a reservation.
4. Open Cost Management, Azure Advisor, Service Health and Azure Policy in the portal. Seeing each tool once makes the look-alike questions easier.
5. Open Cloud Shell and run one Azure CLI command.

Set a budget alert on the first day, and delete anything you create.

Worth paying for

Practice tests written against the current outline. Their value is diagnosis: they show which domain is weakest while there is still time to fix it, and they train you to spot the look-alike answers. Good ones explain why every wrong option is wrong. The free 20-question test here is weighted like the real exam and is a good first check.

Nothing else is necessary. AZ-900 is well covered by free material.

What to avoid

Outdated material. Check any course or book against the current outline. Signs it is too old:

• it says “Azure Active Directory” rather than Microsoft Entra ID;
• it does not mention Microsoft Purview, Azure Arc or Microsoft Defender for Cloud;
• it lists storage access tiers as hot, cool and archive only, without cold;
• it predates the July 2026 update to monitoring, compute and networking, and management tools.

Old material is not useless, but it will cost you marks on exactly the terms that changed.

Braindumps. They break Microsoft’s exam agreement, risk revocation of every certification you hold, and do not help with scenario questions that describe a situation rather than recite a fact.

Portal click-path memorisation. The exam never asks where a button is. It asks which service, feature or tool meets a requirement.

Deep technical courses. An AZ-104 administrator course covers far more than AZ-900 needs. Every objective in AZ-900 starts with “describe”; study to that depth.

A sensible order

1. Read the skills outline once.
2. Take Microsoft’s free practice assessment cold, to find your starting point.
3. Work through the three domains with the Microsoft Learn paths and the domain guides in this section, following the four-week study plan.
4. Take the practice test and find your weakest domain.
5. Revisit that domain and your list of confused pairs.
6. Book once you score 80% or more on realistic questions twice in a row.

Is this the right exam?
