Is AZ-900 worth it? Who should take it
AZ-900 is worth it if you are new to Azure, work alongside Azure teams in a non-technical role, or need a recognised first cloud credential for a job, a partner requirement or a career change. It is cheap in time, it never expires, and it gives you the vocabulary every other Azure exam assumes. It is less worth it if you already work in Azure daily: then an associate certification says more about you for a similar effort.
Who it is for
People starting a cloud career. This is the core audience. Microsoft describes the exam as a common starting point towards a career in Azure, and it teaches the structure and language you need before specialising.
Non-technical roles around Azure. Sales, account management, finance, procurement and project management. AZ-900 lets you follow a technical conversation about regions, redundancy, identity and cost without pretending to be an engineer.
Students. Students and educators can book through Certiport, and Microsoft’s page notes that passing may make you eligible for ACE college credit.
IT professionals moving from on-premises. If you have run servers, networks or databases but not in the cloud, AZ-900 maps what you know onto Azure’s names.
People on another cloud. A quick way to learn Azure’s terminology if your employer is adding it next to AWS or Google Cloud.

Skipping AZ-900 is allowed: Microsoft does not require it before any associate exam. Experienced engineers often go straight to the role-based exam and treat AZ-900 as optional.

The absence of renewal is a real advantage. Associate and expert certifications need a free renewal assessment every year; AZ-900 stays on your profile without further effort. Microsoft also runs Exam Replay offers and other deals, linked from the certification page, which can bring down the cost of a retake.
What it proves
A pass shows that you can:
- explain cloud computing, the shared responsibility model, cloud models and service types;
- describe how Azure is organised physically and logically, and what the core compute, networking, storage and identity services do;
- tell apart the tools for cost, governance, deployment and monitoring.
For a non-technical role, that is exactly what an employer needs to know. For an engineering role, it shows a foundation, not ability.
What it does not prove
It does not show that you can build, configure or troubleshoot anything in Azure. There is no hands-on component. Hiring managers for technical roles know this, and will look for an associate certification or a project you can explain. Treat AZ-900 as the first step, not the credential that gets you an engineering job on its own.
The never-expiring catch
A certification that never expires also never proves that your knowledge is current. Azure changes quickly, and the outline was last revised in July 2026. If you passed years ago, your credential is still valid, but the service names you learned may not be. That matters less for the credential than for the conversations it is meant to help with.
The verdict
Take AZ-900 if you are new to Azure, in a non-technical role around it, a student, or moving from on-premises or another cloud.
