AZ-802 study scenarios: three example paths

Updated October 9, 2026

How you should study for AZ-802 depends on which half of “hybrid” you already know. The exam spans seven domains: Active Directory Domain Services 20 to 25%, storage and file services 15 to 20%, monitoring and troubleshooting 15 to 20%, and four domains at 10 to 15% each. It runs 120 minutes, is offered in English only, and has no official practice assessment yet.

Example profiles, not real people. The profiles below are illustrative planning examples built from the official exam outline. They are not reviews or reports of anyone’s result.

The study plan is four weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week for someone who already administers Windows Server, and eight weeks or more without that experience. The paths below adjust the baseline. Hour figures are planning assumptions.

The on-premises Windows admin who has not met Azure Arc

Starting point. Runs domain controllers, Hyper-V hosts, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP. Uses Server Manager and PowerShell. Has not onboarded a server to Azure Arc or used Azure Update Manager.

Where the time goes. Managing instances and workloads in a hybrid environment (10 to 15%) and the Azure side of storage: Azure Files and Azure File Sync, with cloud tiering. Monitoring (15 to 20%) also changes shape, since data collection rules and Azure Monitor alerts sit beside Performance Monitor.

The trap. Answering with the classic on-premises tool when the scenario states a hybrid requirement. A question about patching across sites may want Azure Update Manager, not a WSUS reflex.

Order. Hybrid management and Arc first, then Azure Files, then monitoring, with a rapid pass over AD DS and Group Policy.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 28 to 36 hours over four weeks, with the AD DS week shortened and the hybrid and storage weeks extended.

The former AZ-800 or AZ-801 candidate

Starting point. Studied one of the two retired exams, which Microsoft retired on 30 September 2026. Knows half the content well and the other half from reading, and may own older courses full of containers, clustering and backup.

Where the time goes. On the half they skipped. A former AZ-800 candidate has the AD DS, networking and storage foundations but needs security hardening (10 to 15%) and Active Directory troubleshooting, including Kerberos and secure channel faults, inside the 15 to 20% monitoring and troubleshooting domain. A former AZ-801 candidate needs Hyper-V, DNS, DHCP and file services.

The trap. Following old material into topics the AZ-802 outline dropped: containers, migration, failover clustering as its own domain, Azure Backup and Site Recovery, and Microsoft Entra Connect.

Order. Read AZ-802 vs AZ-800 and AZ-801 first, mark the new objectives, then study only the gap domains.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 20 to 28 hours: roughly two to three weeks of the baseline pace, since the plan advises skipping what you know and cutting what was dropped.

The Azure-first administrator who learned servers through the cloud

Starting point. Holds or is close to AZ-104, manages Azure virtual machines, Entra ID and Monitor, but has not run an Active Directory forest or a file server with DFS.

Where the time goes. Deploy and manage AD DS (20 to 25%): domain controllers, FSMO roles, sites and site links, trusts, group policy processing and managed service accounts. Then the Windows storage stack (Storage Spaces Direct, iSCSI, BitLocker, FSRM, DFS) and AD troubleshooting.

The trap. Treating AD DS as Entra ID with a different name. Replication, SYSVOL, FSMO and Kerberos behave differently, and AD questions reappear in security and troubleshooting.

Order. Build a lab forest first, as in week 1 of the plan, then do everything else against it.

Time budget. A reasonable planning assumption is 64 to 80 hours over eight weeks, following the plan’s “eight weeks or more” guidance for people without Windows Server experience.

How to check which AZ-802 profile fits before booking

Because there is no official practice assessment, start with the site’s sample questions as a cold baseline and note which of the seven domains each miss belongs to. Then read the exam format for the case-study timing, work through the study plan with your adjusted hours, and take a timed practice test before booking.

Early exams change more often than established ones, so check the study guide date again a week before the exam. If your gap is Azure administration rather than Windows Server, the AZ-104 hub is the adjacent exam.
